Genital exam at sports physical ?

Hi there - I'm a 20 year old man - i just have a few questions about a sports physical I recently had last week. I'm from the UK where we don't have routine physicals, but I'm doing a year at a US university and had to have one for sports.

After talking to a team mate I was expecting a brief genital exam but I was quite taken aback by how thorough it was. At the end of the exam the doctor asked me to take off my underwear at sat on a stool in front of me, and the first thing he said was "oh, you're not circumcised!" in quite a surprised voice, and without asking took hold of my penis and pulled back my foreskin three or four times as far back as it would go, before rolling it back and leaving my glans uncovered. He then felt my testicles, spending what felt like forever on the left one, which he looked at with a little light, and then cupped my balls and asked me to cough. All the time he was doing this, my foreskin rolled back over my glans a couple of times, and he would push it back again so my glans stayed uncovered.

By this time I'd sprung a full of erection, a reflex from all the manipulation of my genitals, and was feeling very awkward. He looked at my penis again and said straight out "does your foreskin always cover your glans like this when you have an erection?" sounding like it was a problem. I said, "yes unless I pull it back". He then pulled it back again, but my foreskin is quite snug when I have an erection, and it took him a few tries. All the time he was asking me if there was any pain or discomfort. He then proceeded to give my penis a very thorough examination, checking my urethra, frenulum, and asking about marks and bumps, all while I was totally erect. He left my glans exposed at the end and said I could get dressed and I'd get the results in a week. It was a very efficient production line process, though my team mate who was waiting outside asked "what took you so long?" and I guess I was bright red!

Anyway, the whole thing felt very weird, though the doctor felt professional and efficient, though very brusque.

i got my form back today and under "GU" the abnormal findings box is marked with the following observations:

Tanner G IV/V, PH V. Uncircumcised - monitor for phimosis? R funiculus normal. L funiculus gr2 varicocele. L test 15ml R 20ml approx.

So I don't know what will happen next..

    Hi,

Firstly remember the USA has a fascination with circumcision (& tooth whitening).

But it does sound excessive. Chance's are he'll want another fiddle and try to talk you into genital mutilation (a circumcision). Phimosis doesn't develop on a normal foreskin which has full retraction.

If I understand right, he's noticed some extra veins on your left testicle. It's not normally a problem in most men. But worth monitoring if it does grow more.

    Happy for dm.

Stand up for your freedom of choice.

If you don't want a circumcision, don't let them force it on you.

Circumcision is a big money-making racket in the US.

American doctors will recommend it for anything, because it puts money in their pockets.

From what you describe, I am SHOCKED at the way the doctor treated you during the examination.

I find his behaviour to be unprofessional and as a doctor, he should know better about penises.

Having a foreskin is not a birth defect.

It is a perfectly normal feature in men and boys.

Also, I don't think you have phimosis.

It seems your foreskin is easily retractable, which is not a sign of phimosis.

Also, it is quite normal for the foreskin to cover part or all of the glans during an erection.

As long as retracting the foreskin does not involve tightness, pain or a struggle, you are fine and that is your normal.

I know it is easy for me to say, but if they are going demand a circumcision as a condition for playing sports, walk away from it.

It would be an easier decision if sports is an extra-curricular activity for you.

If playing sports is a condition of your enrolment at the university, you will have a difficult decision if they demand a circumcision.

If that is what they demand and you go along with it, you will have to deal with the long, very uncomfortable healing process and the consequences of it, especially if they botch the job.

American universities are well known for using young men to win glory on the sports field and then kicking them to the curb when they have outlived their usefulness.

    Also, look at foreskin.org

You will find a list of prominent American athletes who are known to be uncircumcised.

I am from Canada, where circumcision is not a big deal.

    Like you, I am uncut.

Also, my foreskin covers about 95 % of my glans when I am erect, but I can retract it without a struggle, or pain, or tightness.

I like being uncut and I intend to stay that way.

If push comes to shove, you might consider attending a Canadian university.
