Genital herpes detected

Hello everybody,

I've just had my first genital herpes flare up, I really dont know where I got it from. I have a new partner and my main concern is to avoid passing it on to them. What preventative measures should I, and they, taking when performing intercourse and oral sex. I would love to hear to views of those who have gone through a similar situation.

With Best Regards,

    Did you do a test?

Thank you. I went to the doctor's. From looking at it he said it was almost certainly GH. I did a swab and will receive the results in 10 days or so.

Well to be sure u wait for results and in the meantime i am sure the dr put you on medcation. Take them and stay relaxed nothing much you can do. Try washing your hands alot and if you touch the lesions to put some cream wear gloves. Do not have sex with your partner and ask your partner to do an IgG TEST. drink loads of water and if u r in pain there is a cream to numb the pain but use gloves or wash your hands.

How were you diagnosed and with which type? How long have you had it? Does your partner know his/her herpes status? Does he/she know you have herpes? These all matter.

But to answer your question, and assuming you have Type 2, you should avoid him/her having any contact with your genitals whilst you are having an outbreak, or think you are having one or about to have one. At other times, use condoms properly and consistently. Also (not instead of), take the daily suppressive meds for herpes (takes a week to be effective).

Oops, just saw that you're still awaiting your swab results.

Thank you very much for your reply. I immediately told my partner that I had it and they are going to consult with their doctor, whom I think will ask them to do the test. I am going to refrain form sex whilst I have the flare up. Once I know the results, I will be sure to post them to ask for further guidance. Your input is much appreciated.

If this is a first outbreak after having sex with your new partner, it could be that your new partner gave it to you (very strong possibility, in fact). Wait for your results and see how your partner tests. If you both have the same type, then you don't have to worry about transmission, but it's always best to avoid sex during (and just after) outbreaks regardless.

Thank you very much, I will wait for the test results to see how we will proceed. Your feedback has served as an important source of guidance.

I just received the result from my swab, it turns out I have a HSV 1 outbreak on both my genitals and mouth almost certainly received from oral sex with my partner. The good news 'i think' is that HSV 1 is the most common of the two, which when found on the genitals (the less preferred of the two sites has much fewer outbreaks). My question is can I still transmitt it when having sex to someone else. Ive also read that transmitting HSV 1 from the genitals to the mouth is very rare? I wonder if this is the case as I would still be able to receive unprotected oral sex.

Any feedback is most welcome - thank you in advance.
