Genital Herpes: Useful info for those looking for answers like me!

Ever since I suspected genital herpes (GH) and was recently confirmed to be going through a primary outbreak of HSV-2 (ugh, the "bad" one), I have been researching the topic like crazy! Guess that's a pretty normal thing to do, lol, and I'm sure many others here have done the same.

Anyway, I thought it would be helpful to share everything that I have learnt thus far, and I will continue to add to this thread as I come across more useful, interesting and/or relevant info.

Yesssssss I have been on it with the facts and looking up as much info I can. But be very careful  there's a lot of myths and BS out there too. I came to terms with it than this entire usher Raymond fiasco has me back on researching again

Oh, don't worry. I am very careful about which sources to trust. There is a lot of misinformation out there for sure. Most doctors don't even seem to know about herpes properly.

I am so happy you said that. It's crazy that medical personnel are not as informed as they should be for support of patients with this diagnoses. That actually scared me the most. Once diagnosed I went back for a informational appointment and it wasn't too helpful.

Hey I took the igg test . my scores for herpes 2 were 2.23 and my score for herpes 1 was 56.00 . Since it was low positive for herpes 2 , does that mean it is recent infection or I can be a false positive . I been dealing with my current partner since Jan 2017 , unprotected sex . I notice something was wrong in March and this sept I was tested positive for both .

Given your very high HSV1 score and low HSV2 score, there is reason to doubt the accuracy of the latter. Repeat testing with the same kit will not likely change the results. Much better to use a different test kit, or the University of Washington western blot (not the easiest or cheapest to arrange, however).

I first contracted HSV2 back in Aug 2013. I had my first outbreak 2 weeks after contracting it and thought it was bedbugs at first. I develop pink bubbles on my skin that looked like mosquito bites which would grow and form into a large mass of rash. This would happen all over my body, especially around my lymph nodes. Ironically I rarely if ever had outbreaks on my genitals or face. I would also have random swelling and edema around fingers/toes/hands/feet. When I went to the doctor he just said my body is obviously fighting off an infection. A week after that a sexual partner of mine said he was diagnosed with HSV2, however when I went to the doctor they said I cultured negative. So the first outbreak lasted about 3-4 weeks. After that there were no outbreaks for about 3 years.

Randomly I started getting the same symptoms again and this started in May 2016. This time it was constant, everyday, fluctuating in intensity sometimes. My symptoms never included weeping sores or any fluids, they just look like bug bites that get bigger and spread. Then the pink areas diminish and after a few hours without leaving a mark if I don't scratch it. I've also had random swelling of an eyelid or parts of my tongue which I know is also symptoms of it. This second outbreak was horrific. It lasted from May 2016 till October 2016. Then eventually just faded away. I had went to several doctors getting prescriptions of acyclovir and valacyclovir. The Valtrex worked better for me, the acyclovir actually seems to intensify it sometimes. However, it would barely help minimize it rather than stop anything. What strangely make the symptoms go away temporarily was when I was drinking alcohol. If I drank for a few hours I would have no symptoms.

After the last outbreak ended in Oct 2016 I was totally fine without taking medication for a year. I recently just switched from Nuvaring to Mirena IUD and on day 2 of the IUD I developed another outbreak. The hormonal change definitely triggered it. I am on day 7 of the outbreak and it's not showing signs of subsiding. I just hope this outbreak doesn't last as long as the last one which was excruciating at times.

For reference, I'm very active, 5 days a week of HIT and weightlifting workouts followed by protein shakes (which do intensify outbreaks). I drink alcohol 1-2 days per week socially. I eat very healthy and clean. Those factors seemed to have no effect on when I was having an outbreak or when it was dormant. It just randomly went away after an incredibly long stay last time.

That doesn't actually sound like herpes (all over body but genitals, outbreaks way too long), plus you tested negative.

Sorry for the long explanation in advance. I had unprotected sex 6 weeks ago. Within two days I started having burning redness and a rash on my vulva. Went to urgent care and was tested for a full panel including herpes and hiv . All tests came back negative but symptoms persisted. Next I went to a nurse practitioner who diagnosed me with bv and prescribed me antibiotics for 7 days. I did the full course and I still had all my symptoms. Next step I went to an obgyn who diagnosed me with a yeast infection and did 7 days of the cream treatment. Problem was STILL there so I went back and she gave me oral medication for the yeast and guess what rash is still there. So I change obgyns who tested me with a full panel again and all results were negative. Also bv and yeast were negative as well. So EVERY person I saw said it did not look like herpes. It's a very light rash with no ulcers or pimples. Honestly it just looks like I'm cold down there.... like I have goosebumps. The bumps are not filled with anything and have no color and the skin is red like it's irritated. Im still worried its herpes though because from reading and research it seems it is possible to not have the classic symptoms for herpes. Also I have 3 antibody blood tests all negative but it's only been 6 weeks since symptoms started and I've also read it could take months to show antibodies. I guess my concern is I've done antibiotics and creams and I still have this rash so what else would it be but herpes? I just find it odd that I have this active rash and I could still get negative results on the blood test! Has anyone else gone through something like this ?

They never once swabbed you for herpes?? If they suspected it at all and the potential exposure was recent, that's ridiculous of them to only run blood tests. Having said that, it doesn't sound like herpes, as it's been there too long and hasn't changed, plus the description isn't typical.

There had never been anything to swab. There isn't leasions or ulcers. Just a rash with small bumps that look like goosebumps.

They can still swab, especially using a pcr swab. But no matter. It really doesn't sound like herpes. Unchanging goosebump-like rash that's been there for a while sounds nothing like herpes, plus you've had others confirm that it doesn't look like herpes either, so I would stop worrying. Test for IgG antibodies at three months if you're still concerned.

Hi there, back on Christmas Eve last year I was diagnosed with HSV. I’ve always had HSV1, but this time it was on my genitals. I didn’t have a swab test done at the time because it was a quick care place on Christmas Eve and I sat waiting to be seen for 3 1/2 hours. Hindsight I should have, but, on january 4th I made an appointment with my ob, got the swab both 1 and 2 came back “not detected” but my IGG blood results came back as HSV1 >5.00 and HSV2 <0.90

Does this mean what I think that it does...it’s 1 in the gentians?

If what you had was definitely herpes on your genitals, then your blood test indicates it's HSV1, but if you have always had HSV1 orally, then you'd expect a positive IgG, you ought to be immune from getting it elsewhere, and the result does not prove that what you had on your genitals was herpes. Only the swab can prove infection at a particular site.

Oh it definitely was. I had he major ob...fever, leg pain, ulcers that covered my genitals, my lymph nodes hurt, the whole 9 yards. Never would wish it upon anyone.

I’m on the 2nd ob since and I have 3 ulcers, 2 semi bad but 1 really bad about the size of a quarter. Had the same prodome. When I went to the ob the first time, they said it’s rare to transfer 1 to genitals but it’s possible. I have HSV1 to my hubby. So they think he may have had something while oral and transferred it down there. Even with the 2nd ob I am not as bad as The first. The first knocked me down for weeks. This maybe a few days. Lidocaine and Valtrex have helped. But if I’m right they say HSV 1 on the genitals have a once a year ob opposed to HSV2 having 3-4?

I’m praying this is the case because even though this is ob 2 it’s awful and painful, butnot like the first.

The average is once a year for HSV1, if that, and more like 4-6 a year for HSV2. But these are averages, so some with HSV1 may have more, and some with HSV2 may have less. The next time you have an outbreak, I would get it swabbed to be sure.

Sorry just one last question...during a recurrent ob how long can the blisters keep appearing? So I got the first 2 Sunday then Monday another showed up and the other 2 got bigger now today I see 2 more. Is this normal? I’m taking Valtrex 100g a day and 3000mg of L-Lysine
