Genital Herpes: Useful info for those looking for answers like me!

Ever since I suspected genital herpes (GH) and was recently confirmed to be going through a primary outbreak of HSV-2 (ugh, the "bad" one), I have been researching the topic like crazy! Guess that's a pretty normal thing to do, lol, and I'm sure many others here have done the same.
Anyway, I thought it would be helpful to share everything that I have learnt thus far, and I will continue to add to this thread as I come across more useful, interesting and/or relevant info.

Hi. I just found out I have HSV 2 a few weeks ago. I have had HSV 1 for as long as I can remember. I only found out about 2 because of my yearly exam with my gyno... I have never showed any symptoms that I would have though of as hsv.. I have had razor burn and that's the only thing I can think of but it's pretty normal for me to get razor burn so I feel like it's not related at all.. in an article I read from some Australian medical thing, it talked about the possible fever muscle ache's and other flu like symptoms when you first contract the virus so I believe it was probably almost a year ago now since I contracted it since that's the last time I was sick that I recall.. in that same article it said headaches are another symptom.
Soo, my question is this. All I have been having are severe headaches which is not common for me. I have had random itching but I really feel like it's that kinda thing where someone says they see a spider and suddenly you feel one crawling on you? I think it's all in my head. I'm scared to go back to the doctor, terrified. What would be the chances, using a condom, that I would pass it to my boyfriend who is also scared to get checked since I'm not having actual outbreaks ... he won't touch me any more. He barely kisses me ..I need information to hopefully put his mind at ease ...and mine for that matter..

Oh, that's never good to be told that!
How were you diagnosed? If only visually, then that is not very accurate. If by swab test, then that is accurate, I'm afraid. If by blood test, it depends. There's a lot of info and advice contained in this thread, so hopefully that will provide you with a good starting point. Ask away if you have any specific questions.

Hey, I have a question about the initial outbreak my last sexual encounter was around 13 days ago eith a new partner who has repeatedly told me he is completely clean but ever since a day after I've been having soreness and feeling warm around my vagina and anus no blisters or redness just discomfort. I've been to my gyno and she says that everything looks normal and the irritation around my anus is mostly due to my ibs . My question to you is if it's it's normal to feel like this for almost two weeks after possible exposure and still have no visible sign? Also I heard that mostly all initial outbreaks happen 2-20 after exposure if that's true will I be in the clearer those 20 days? Also how painful if genital herpes as I really don't have pain down there just discomfort. How long should I wait to get tested to see if it is herpes 2 using a blood test?

Hi, I'm 18 and was diagnosed with HSV-2 yesterday. I'm not upset or angry about it at all, just kind of surprised. I acknowledge that it's something a lot of people live with and can be very manageable.
My biggest frustration is that my first outbreak is atrocious. I'm a freshman in college and it has prevented me from going to classes both yesterday and all of today because my right labia is swollen about 3 times the normal size and I can't walk without pain. Especially if I attempt to wear anything other than extremely loose sweats, and it still hurts so badly that I am limping horribly. I can't take baths because I live in the dorms, and have two roommates so my time in the bathroom is already limited. I'm obviously keeping my diagnosis a secret from them because they are both very conservative young women and would be terrified if I told them.
I am on a prescribed pill that I take 3 times a day as well as numbing ointment. This helps, but really only when I'm laying down. Walking is still excruciating. I wasn't stressed out by my diagnosis, but missing classes because I can't walk across campus has me stressed.
I'm also concerned about my boyfriend. My gyno believes that I contracted HSV-2 from his HSV-1 (cold sores) when he performed oral sex on me last week. I never even knew he got cold sores, so when I called to tell him that I had contracted GH, he was absolutely devastated. In fact, he's coping far worse than I am. He feels absolutely awful and keeps saying it's "his fault" even though it's nobody's fault. He has struggled majorly with depression in the past and I can tell that this has him depressed.
How long do you think my first outbreak will last without me being able to have any personal time or ability to bathe? I can't continue to miss classes. And does anyone have any idea what I can say to my boyfriend to make him feel better? I've tried everything.
Thanks so much.

First of all, if it's from your bf's oral HSV-1, then you've also got HSV-1, only genitally instead. The number does not indicate location, but the virus type. Genital HSV-1 is much better to have than genital HSV-2, since it recurs far less and is not nearly as infectious, etc. You should get it swabbed asap to confirm which type you have, if you haven't already.
First outbreaks of either type can last anywhere between 2-4 weeks, often with a second crop of lesions after the first week, and with noticeable improvements commencing after two weeks. You can apply topical lidocaine for local pain relief, or take oral acetaminophen or ibuprofen for general pain relief. Diluted tea tree oil can relieve itching.
Just tell you bf that many people carry the virus without knowing, as HSV is often near or even fully asymptomatic. If it's Type 1 that you have, then almost 3/4 of the population has it. Not such a big deal. Type 2, on the other hand, is less common, but given your ages, I doubt either of you have that.

are migraines a common symptom of HSV2? I usually get them after I have finished my medication and my sores have disappeared. They make my eyes really sensitive to light and it is rather annoying [sad] Â
thanks in advance.

Hey, so I was diagnosed with hsv 2. About a week after having sex (oral/vaginal) with a new partner I started noticing weird symptoms.. couple days later I went to the doctor and she confirmed it was hsv. Five days later I got the call, the test results and it was hsv 2. So I have a couple of questions... if I contracted it genitally could I have contracted it orally too (since we did oral and vaginal that same day)? Also if I have sex with a new partner (someone I know is negative for herpes) is it possible for me to pass it to him if I give him oral? My main worry is giving it to someone who doesn't have it. I really was torn up about this.. but I'd be even worse if I knew I gave it to someone else. For some reason I'm really paranoid that I could have hsv 2 orally. I've read it's "very rare" but I also can't find very much info on it. I definitely don't have any oral symptoms of any kind my outbreak was all genital. I'm just worried that I could have it in my mouth since his junk is what gave it to my genitals in the first place.

That's a tricky one. Yes, it's possible to acquire HSV2 in both locations from the same encounter. However, HSV2 strongly prefers the genitals over other areas, so it's very possible that you just have it genitally. The problem is that, without symptoms, it's hard to know if you also have it orally. On the plus side, oral HSV2 very rarely recurs or sheds, so even if you have it orally, you are highly unlikely to give it to someone via your mouth. You are far more infectious genitally (especially as a newly infected individual) than you'd ever be orally. If it's any consolation, I have also wondered the same about myself, but am not worried about having it orally, even if I do have it there, for these very reasons.

Hi Felis, so I'm trying to figure out who I got HSV 2 from, and was wondering if it's possible for me to have HSV 2 for months before having a first outbreak? or would the outbreak come a few days after I first contracted the virus?
Thank you.

It's possible, but usually most people who experience a first outbreak will do so within a week of infection. If you are newly infected and still in your first outbreak now, you can do the IgG antibody test (*not* IgM). If HSV2 positive by swab but negative by IgG test, then you know it is a fairly new infection, as your body has had no time to produce detectable antibodies.

Okay, thanks again Felis- don't think I could've gone through my first outbreak without your insights!
