Genital warts help

Hi everyone. Just really needed some advice about genital warts. I’ve been suffering with them since August 2018 but was only diagnosed and been having treatment since February 2019. I just can’t seem to get rid of them!! Aldara works but then they seem to reappear within days after finishing treatment, warticon also works but I can never tell if they have fully gone. I find myself constantly looking to see if there’s anything there every time I go to the toilet, which I hate but I just want them to go! Any advice on what to do??? I know in my head I need to stop looking and leave it be because the last time I went to the sexual health clinic they told me there was nothing there. But I’ve got in my head that there is! Please help.

    Dear anomtb,

I see we corresponded about two months ago.

It's perfectly natural to be upset by a condition like genital warts because you're aware that there isn't a cure and a chance of it recurring. The good news is that you eventually develop immunity to the infection, so once they've cleared there's a very good chance they won't return. In most cases, genital warts clear after about 18-24 months...even without treatment; and judging by your own account, you're rapidly approaching its second anniversary!

Just make sure you are up to date with your smears and if you haven't done so already (esp if you are < 25yr), consider getting HPV vaccinated with Gardasil through the NHS. This will not only prevent you getting genital tract cancers but will also boost your immunity to the HPV types (HPV 6 and 11) most commonly associated with genital warts. And don't smoke.

I sound like a broken record.
