getting into car the normal way

Hi folks. I' m 8 weeks post RTHR. Consultant gave me the o.k to drive again last week. I am bone on bone on the left hip. Have been getting into car by sitting sideways and swinging legs in as advised, but find now I'm back in the driving seat because the seat isn't as far back, and I'm leading with the left leg, finding it really difficult to lift that leg into the car. Does anyone know if (or when) it is o.k to get into the car the ' normal' way? I.e by putting leg in first ?

    Hi Shirley

I'm right thr and 12 weeks, i get in the driving side every day normally, cos I just forget and have been doing so for about 3-4 weeks, however when i get in the passenger seat I have to get in the correct way for hippies, so sit on seat sideways and swing legs round. No probs with operated leg.

I imagine your problem with left leg first is due to the wearung away of the cartilage and won't be easier till after your op on that leg.

You are absolutely right Christine. I'm just trying to find the best way to cope in the mean time.

    Hi Shirley

Like you I had a RTHR and like you I also need my left hip done which is bone on bone but I am 12 weeks post op. Since I have been driving (5weeks) I get in to the car backing on to seat and swing my legs around making sure I leave the seat back as far back as it will go. I have pain in my left hip whatever I do so I think just go with whatever is the most comfortable.

Its so good having no pain in the right hip and being able to drive again!

Hopefully we will soon get our other hip done and we will be bionic women!

    Best wishes

It is fantastic to have one hip pain free - just find it frustrating to still not be able to do as much as I'd like to do because of the other hip. As you say, one day will be bionic women!. Do you move the car seat back to get in and then forward to drive - or are you able to drive with it right back?

I agree it is frustrating as although you want to do so much more with your new hip your old one is still holding you back. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the second one (don't want to sound ungrateful but don't want to undo all the good that has already been done by limiting exercise etc because of pain in left hip).

Yes I push seat back to get in and out of the car and then push it forward to drive - I've only got short legs!  When I get out of the car I push the seat back and then it's ready for next time I get back in.

    Hi

I've had both hips done and 5 years after the first one I still get into the passenger seat the "lady like way"  LOLcheesygrin  I like my driving seat forward and no way could I get into the drivers side like that so I just do it the best way I can. Try not to stretch too much.....it is hard. Had the other one done about 18 months ago....same thing. Drivers side I have to be careful but  passenger side I swing my legs round.

Sorry thats not a lot of help   just my experience

    Love
