Getting Out and about after THR and frustrated.

Nearly 4 weeks post op and crawling the walls as cannot drive yet. Walking going OK but not as far as shops, or pub!!

Saw a cheap 2nd hand mobility scooter for sale and bought it! Great hilarity in my family as the grown up kids all tried it, raced it, video'd it face booked it etc. I tried it out this morning and got to shops , post office and it made a huge difference to how I felt. I know you can hire them but this was so cheap and I can sell it on when I get the ok to drive. Felt good not having to ask for help to collect my prescription!!! I had a great day today!!! Hope everyone else's day was as good!

    Hi Jan

I will be at 5 weeks post op next Tuesday and I do share your frustration

But as my right hip is in desperate need of replacing also it is a struggle for me to go too far even now.  I may have to look into a mobilityscooter. I would love the freedom.  Glad you are enjoying your freedom. smile

Jan I love mine. I can go to the malls and shop with all the time in the world.

I had to walk my dog that. It looked funny because she was out in from of me, so it looked like the dog was pulling me.Ha ha. I couldn't walk as fast as she could early on. And I don't have a yard.lol

so creative !!! you might prefer the scooter over the car - no parking problems and can even take them into to the store .... now why didn't I think of that ....

feels great though, doesn't it ----

    Hi Jan

Its great isnt it.....I had my op on  a Friday and was out on Monday morning.

Years ago  lol but  do remember the climbing up the walls so on Sat {5 days after getting out of hospital} I peruaded my husband to take me and scooter to a shopping centre. He wasnt sure about it but eventually gave in.  He got me on the scooter, loads of instructions about dont do tis dont do that!!!!! Men......but eventually left me and what fun I had. The freedom was great.......I'm at the bottom of a hill and this was in winter and it was icey o I didnt have the courage to go out in the street on it. 6 weeks I was behind the wheel of my car. Before the 6 weeks was up we used t get into Peters car, scooter in the boot and if we went to a large store or large garden centre I used it.

    2 weeks isnt long and you'll be back in your car then.  I kept my scooter in the garage and as it happens I occasionally need it...{another story LOL}

    Good luck

    Love

Good for you! Glad you had so much fun.  I hired a mobility scooter for a month. It arrived a few days after I got home from hospital and it was the best thing I could have done. As I live alone I would have been dependent on others taking me to the shops etc, but with the scooter I went out when I felt like it, which was almost every day. It had a frame with a large bag on the back ( in which I could put three full supermarket bags of groceries), a crutch holder and basket in front for bits a pieces.

Each day I drove the scooter to a nearby sports field where I did my exercise walk around the perimeter. A great aid to recovery, both physically and mentally.  And so much fun! I'm 56 yrs old & thought I might feel a bit self-conscious on a scooter as they are mostly used by people older than me, but it didn't worry me in the least. Lots of them in my neighbourhood, so pedestrians & shop keepers used to them being parked outside shops, supermarket, etc.

You'll have no trouble selling it - should you wish to - once you're back driving the car.

      Hi Cathy

Just to add to your post......when I bought my second hand one I felt the same as you. The Salesman {who had already made the sale} told me that when his car  was in for service he borowed one of the scooters {large one LOL}to go home on and use it while his car was in the garage.....At a guess I would say be was about 50.....He wasnt one bit worried about being seen on itbiggrin

      Love
