getting that familiar pain again !

Hi everyone, i am now 8 weeks post THR and up until now everything has been great, could feel my progress improving each day, but now,in the last couple of days all of a sudden i am getting that horrid groin pain again as well as my new hip area feeling very sore, i am walking indoors without a stick, but need one when out and about, i am driving again ( surgeons permission ), also lying on my sides again at night although the new hip side does feel slightly sore, so its usually only 10 mins at a time, so was wondering what i have done thats started this up again, any suggestions ?

    Hip Christine

just wondered if you were at the stage where you can do some glute and lower abdominal strengthening exercises?  These muscles, particularly the glutes support the hip joint and weaker quickly after short periods of inactivity.

To read this Christine you would have thought i had written it.I am 7 weeks post THR and everything has been great with all that familiar pain from before the operation gone.Driving again,no crutches indoors and only one outside and generally starting to feel great.Until yesterday when after a short walk to the shop and back i started to get groin pain.Took some pain killers that i havent needed to take for weeks i went to bed. This morning pain as bad and needed my crutches again around the house. This has really shaken me up and like you cant think what i have done wrong??

      Hi Debbielou

Whatever you do dont try to be brave by thinking "i should be able to walk with one crutch" and forcing yourself to or by not taking painkillers if you really need them. Keep on top of the pain, dont play catch up.

Check with your doctor even if its only to set your mind at rest but 7 weeks is very early

      Take care

      Love

Hi Debbie, if its any consulation i feel better today, i just put it down to overdoing it, doing something that your new hip dosnt like !  i started doing stuff i always did before, going out in the car and doing two or three errands in one day, must slow down, its easy to get complacent, i figured out that i was climbing the stairs without a stick and i could really feel the strain, i also had to go back to painkillers for a couple of days, have a little think Debbie and work out what you think might be straining your hip, let me know in a couple of days how things pan out, chris

This healing takes a quite some time.  Although my first THR was pain free from the 4th week and has been the strong leg for the left THR  that I had four months later.

It can take a year before you do not have those spells, but it sounds like you handled it well with the pain killer and rest.  Another thing I noticed about mself is that on those days where I feel I may have overdone it judging by the presence of pain and the level of pain, often the next day I am actually stronger and have less pain.  So really, who can predict?  Just keep your spirits up, your full healing is in the making!

      My best,

      Dawn

Thankyou everyone for all your advice, feeling a bit better today and think i did overdo it.Had a really hectic weekend with lots of walking and in my head think i am recovered.Been doing hoovering with out my crutches and even bent down a few times to pick up items from floor.Being sensible now and listening to my body and using a crutch again until i feel stronger again.I suppose i thought that if i really pushed myself i would recover quicker as i hope to go back to work in a few weeks.Feeling a bit down now and lost my confidence a bit as like Christine said was feeling a bit cocky that i was feeling so good.

Good. Morning! I think we worry too much. Maybe we read to many horror stories. I am anxious to get back to work..6 months out. I never take sick days...so a lot of cabin fever here. Ive read it takes a good year to recover. So i think we will have good days and bad. We are now bionic and stronger! Stay in faith 😀

Hey, good on ya Debbielou, just like you i am feeling a lot better, glad you are as well, just proves how quick you can recouver from this very invasive surgury and we tend to forget whats involved, im certainly just going with the flow now, and not rushing things, taught myself a lesson there i think !, good luck, chris

Hey Christine just to let you know today i am feeling on top of the world and completely pain free.I cant understand how some days you feel really good and others awful.I am still trying to be careful though as i know if i overdo it again i could be back to square one.Difficult though as today i feel i could run a marathon and feel tempted to do every thing that needs doing while i feel so good.I hope too you are having a good day . Oh by the way if you dont mind me asking how old are you ?? I am only 52 and think this is why i am finding everything so frustrating.Best wishes Debbie

Hi, even though you feel as though you could run a marathon just remember that your mind will tell you one thing and your body will say something else, especially the following day - Small steps each day are better than big ones followed by none 'cos you're in too much pain. It took me some time to come to terms with that but that's how it needs to be post THR.

Take care and remember slowly, slowly gets you there just as quick in the end. XX

Hey, thats great news, just proves we all get the same aches and pains throughout  the healing process, i,m 66 and feeling pretty good today, although i did have a restless night, couldnt get comfortable, i was lying on my operated side for quite a while and it protested in the morning !!, dont think i'm ready for running yet, although just been round the supermarket and  that usually nackers me !!, dont try and do everything at once, a bit of dust on the shelves dosnt matter, if i dont feel like cleaning then i dont, the dog hairs can stay on the mat ha ha , yes, i should think at 52 you would feel like you could do more ( wish i was that age again ), as your still a young'en, but take ut slow, keep in touch, we can compare at 10 weeks, or thereabouts, chris
