Give it time

i have been taking sertraline for depression and anxiety for 5 months, started off 50mg .. After the first 3 to 4 weeks i noticed my mood picking up a bit, good and bad days , my anxiety was the same, and at 5 week s i had strange tension feelings in my tummy, but reassured myself it was a side effect that would pass. i would say that by week 8 , i was feeling consistently much better, but still a little fragile. i subsequently had my dose increased after 12 weeks to 100 mg due to stressful life circumstances; then at week 17 i requested an increase to 150 mg due to my anxiety bubbling again due to continued stresses in my life. i still get some anxiety, but believe that is partly still to my body adjusting to higher dose. MOOD wise, i am much better again and more resilient emotionally. MY advice is, stick with this medication, you really have to be patient and give it time to work ! i had no major side effects, bit more sleepy and some increased tension / anxiety in tummy when first started and during dose increases. i found this forum very helpful especially when i first started and needed hope that it would work for me! 😉

Hi Melanie. Great to hear the progress you've made and hear a positive experience on medication. We are all so eager to recover that we get impatient with the medication taking time. It is not an immediate fix and people often make the mistake of giving up on it before i gets a chance to work for you. I really believe this forum is a fantastic environment to learn from other's experiences and to help eachother.

I really hope you continue to improve and wish you all the best.

AWWW thanks so much! THIS forum really helped me during the dark days when i felt i would never get out of the dark hole ! MY mum is going through a similiar thing, and is now noticing improvements in mood 5 weeks into treatment ( she was on 50mg for 3 weeks, this was then increased to 100mg two weeks ago, over the past week her mood is consistently improving and her obsessive thoughts are not quite as troublesome and her appetite is back to normal. i keep reassuring her it will take time! i cant emphasise this enough from my own experience. MY MUMS doctor said y ou should see some improvements within 2 weeks, MY doctor said 1 month . BUT, to really see sustained improvement it most definitly takes longer .
