I'm not a medical expert but I have studied human physiology. The glands which swell when you have an infection, and often with CFS, are actually lymph nodes, part of the body's immune system used to fight infections and other intruders. The salivary glands are different, they produce saliva which lubricates the mouth and starts to digest your food. So swelling here might mean something else is going on. Perhaps you need to ask your doctor about it if it continues.

I think I m right in saying you have neck jaw and ear pain at times and swollen glands??? Correct me if I am wrong but thought this might help , an excerpt from endocrinoigists lecture" Normally hypothyroid disease does not  cause localized pain in the throat or neck or referred pain to the face ear or dental structures. One exception that occasionally occurs is pain that arises from hashimoto thyroiditis which is an autoimmune inflamatory disease of the thyroid gland . It can cause painful or tender enlargement of the thyroid and in a small percentage of cases pain can be referred into the mandible or other submandibular sites. NOTE: the mandible is the lower jaw submandibular is the area beneath the lower jaw ! If your doctor is indifferent to your pain in these  areas it is because gp s and clinicians even some endocrinologists do not know this fact So dismiss it and stick to the CFS/ fibro diagnosis . The symptoms are much the same for ME/CFS/fibro and hypothyroidism !!

Thanks for your replies. Ive had every blood test going and all come back fine. Also had ct scan of neck and nothing shows so Im not sure but think Hashimotos might have shown up in all that. Don't get me wrong, it's hardly a pain- more of an occasional twinge that I get 2 or 3 times a day. Sometimes I won't feel it all for days/weeks at a time x

Hi Danielle;   yes I agree re having these salivary glands checked, as these are not glands that fight infection..................and as a sufferer of Fibro for over 20 years, I can't remember having pain related to this area (even with my facial muscle pain)..................Bron
