Glandular Fever

I’ve been diagnosed with Glandular Fever. I originally had severe tonsillitis about 6 weeks ago and it has then turned into Glandular Fever. I can’t be awake for more than 3 hours or I fall asleep, I struggle with daylight, I have no appetite (lucky if I have one meal a day) and when I do eat it is so painful. I’m off sick from work as I literally fall asleep if it’s over 3 hours and I feel like such a burden on my work. I’m lucky I work for the NHS and I get paid when I’m off sick but I still feel awful handing in a sick line when I know we are short-staffed! It’s making me want to get fit and back to work. Any advice on this?

    Hi bfender,

im a 41 yr old also in the u.k.

I'm at the end (hopefully) of my glandular fever journey. It's nearly about 18 months now for me!! I'm still not back to work yet😬.

i would recommend you eat as healthy as you can, avoid sugar, caffeine and def no alcohol. I took vitamins and supplements. Please rest as much as you can, especially when you start to feel a bit better. You end up crashing down again. The recovery is very zig zag and every time I felt better I would do stuff and then crash. It's so very difficult though to know what to do. Listen to your body.

i also had a horrible mood that came over me when I felt tired, exhausted and nauseous. I sometimes found it hard to talk. I would feel so glum. And it also made me cry for no reason. I would say at about 12 months I definately felt better for longer. A good 9 week stretch in fact, then it went a bit wobbly again but I'm doing well, enjoying a normal life, I'd say 95% back. I can still get breathless sometimes but I have full days. I am no where like I was in the beginning. I kept a diary so I could look back on my progress.... You can't see progress from day to day but maybe week to week or month to month. The progress also has no rhyme or consistentency either. I would have maybe a good two days and then expect to build on that and it just wouldn't be the case, but overall, looking back now, I can see the progress.

it helped me also by just saying no to everything and having no pressures, it is hard for people to understand when they haven't felt sickness for so long, it really is the pits but please remember this is not forever, NO WAY is it for ever. My gp originally said 6-12 months...I went and saw an Endocrinologist in Dec and he said another 6-12 to make a full recovery. There is hope. Just believe and know that this is not forever. I need people to tell me this all the time to keep a positive mind, that's also a good thing to have.

this is a great forum with great people. It's nice to know that what you're experiencing is normal and others all round the world are sick for this long too. You're definately not alone.

    take care

    Hi Bfender,

So sorry to hear you're having such a hard time with glandular fever. It really is a horrible virus and empathising having been through it myself 10 years ago. Please don't feel at all bad for being off work, you are doing the right thing as your body needs rest with this virus, mistake so many folks make is to keep pushing through it - I had to be off work for 5 months and then part-time for a while after that until I built up again. The fatigue is awful and really empathising, just want you to know that this does pass and there is recovery, it can take a few months for some and did for me, but everyone is different and most important thing to remember is that you will get better, truly you will.

Taking vitamins and herbs really helped me, a good strong multi-vitamin per day, high doses of Vitamin C (1000mg-3000mg per day), B complex (great for energy levels and nervous system) and immune boosting herbs like oregano, siberian ginseng and echinicea.

Hang in there and remember this will pass and you will get better, don't panic if it doesn't come right away, because it definitely will come!

    Craig
