Hi all im 25 and was diagnosed about 3months ago. I am on 48mg of serc twice a day and have had one round of 3 weeks of steriod shots but i am still having 2-3 vertigo attacks a week. My ent doctor wont do the shots for me but has referred me to see an ear specialists...i am waiting for that appt...my ent told me that this shot will completely disable my hearing at the current time i still ha e 60% of my hearing and wear a hearing aid (im a teacher cant manage without it). Im wondering if any of u have had this shot done and what r the reprucussions and if it actually helped with the vertigo. Thank u!

Hi Miranda, I'm wondering what serc is here in the US? I am hoping I can get my Ent doc to do the shots as my vertigo attacks are coming closer together and are worse then when they started. I have heard somewhere about pine bark? Not sure if it works or not. Let me know what you find out.

    Dear Miranda,

Just want to say that it took 9 steroid injections for my initial series to finally completely get rid of all of the symptoms of MD.  It took much longer than the typical case, but I have a very bad case, and seemingly very resistant ears!  Still, I'm so happy that I stuck with the steroids. I want to preserve what little hearing I have left, so that I can ultimately be a candidate for a hearing aid.

I understand what drives someone to finally resort to Gentamycin, and it might indeed be, in the end, your best solution.  It's just that the steroids can't do any damage, and sometimes they take a while to kick in.  My doctor essentially said that he would be patient if I could be patient.

Still, I know that some MD sufferers get 6 months to a year of relief from the Gentamycin injections.  It's just that you have to be ready to let go of your remaining hearing, and possibly deal with long term balance issues.  Additionally, post injection side effects can be pretty challenging, and last 2 to 4 weeks.

It takes a lot of research, and a lot of soul searching to decide what's best for you.  I'm sure you'll hear from members who have had both.

I wish you all the best!

    Sincerely,

    J-

In exerienced hands, it is not expected to affect hearing.  There is a small chance it might, but it is not a given.  Gentamicin is vestibular specific.
