globus, tight throat, reflux, antibiotics, mucus

Hi all, here is my story.... Earlier this year (feb/mar) I went to the doctor for a t infection. He gave me antibiotics. Shortly after I started feeling "off", something in my neck was starting to get tense. Then it started getting worse, this was over the course of many weeks. Then it really intensified to the point where I thought I was chocking to death. I went to the ER twice and they said it was reflux. The gave me benadyl and prednisone.

So after I got out, the sensation was a little better. I went to see many doctors after to see what was wrong, I did two different barium swallows, ordered the pepsin test and did 3 endoscopes.

The swallows looked fine, nothing unusual with the esophogus and no hernia, the endoscopes showed some inflamation above the vocal cords but nothing too serious and the pepsin test came back negative. I have tried ppis, gabapentin and other meds but nothing helped, there was a nasal spray that did help witha some of the mucus behind my throat.

Its been around 7 month that I feel a tight throat, clicking sometimes, dryness in my mouth, and burning in my upper palate and tongue.

The doctors said its not cancer or the thyroid, they did tests for them both, also, I had a bout of asthma for the first time in my life just before I went to the ER, the doctor gave me an inhaler and I only used it a few times but that was months ago. If I had to guess what the problem is, a lot of things point to silent reflux. Not sure what to do net

Morning. Sorry to hear of your discomfort too. Sounds very similar to mine. Same discomfort and duration. My GP did a thyroid test as I had a thyroid complaint years ago, but bloods were normal. Finally got an endoscopy on Friday and the doctor there said she found a hiatus hernia which was I guess, a bit if a relief as I was genuinely fearing that they'd find an "obstruction" as that is what it felt like I had - categorically. I too got the clicking sensation and the more I noticed I , the more I tried to swallow etc thus aggravating it further. This hernia thing kind of explains other symptoms. I have had asthma medication for years but whenever I have had my chest listened to by doctors they tell me it's clear. The doctor on Friday explained that aggravation of the gullet such as a hernia can quickly produce asthma symptoms, but not actually asthma. A couple of days before my test on Friday I did notice the Globus symptoms were alleviating slightly, but now they are significantly improved. I can only think that the fretting etc that I was going through beforehand was making the whole feeling worse. Hope this helps and that you feel better soon.

Hi. I opted for the anaesthetic throat spray which freezes your throat, tongue and feels like you can't swallow, however there are no lasting after effects and within 15 mins it felt fine again. They out a mouth guard in your teeth then feed a 1cm diameter tube down your throat, getting you to swallow twice, once to get through your vocal chords I think and once to enter through the stomach valve. You don't actually feel anything apart from the tube passing behind your tongue but I can understand why some people would panic as you do feel like you are going to choke - but you don't!!!! They do twist the camera to your right when in your stomach just to get a view of your duodenum which feels a bit strange but NOT painful. Once down there they feed a second wire down the tube to collect a stomach bacteria sample but you genuinely don't know they're doing it apart from seeing them slip the wire into the tube itself. All told, they were in and out in about 2-3 minutes. You lie on your left side with your back to the monitor showing the 'view' so thankfully you never actually see anything. I did have a very sore throat and raspy cough afterwards but it's a known side effect. Don't worry too much about it. I hope I haven't put you off - the answers or peace of mind you get afterwards is well worth it.
