Globus when swallowing

Posted , 3 users are following.

I have had this Globus feeling for about five weeks. In this time I have seen two dr’s the first said he can’t see anything, the second was more thorough and felt my neck and looked down my throat and couldn’t see anything. I was prescribed antidepressants and told to take Gaviscon

I’ve been on Dr Google, I know I shouldn’t, and keep thinking I have Cancer which starts the cycle again.

I have read up on Globus and 90% of me thinks yes this is what I have but my anxiety claimsvtge other 10%. After reading forum posts here I feel a little better but was wonder if anyone notices the lump whilst eating. Mine doesn’t cause me any issues when eating but sometimes I can still feel it and almost my food pass over it. It is a weird sensation and I’m due back at the drs on the 5th where I will be asking for tests. I just wondered if anyone else has this feeling.

Thanks

Hi, so my battle with all this started the day after Christmas 12/26/17 and as of today I still have this crazy lump in my throat feeling. My ent started backwards in my opinion first he blamed reflux put me on meds of course they didn’t help, next he went straight to an mri this was supp to last 30 min and it got cut short at around 12 min cause they noticed a metal artifact in my head I didn’t know existed (it was a BB) been there since a child  im assuming. What results he did get he said they looked normal. Next they had me do an endoscopy and they cut like 3 pieces to biopsy down In my stomach which was dumb cause I felt like it’s not the issue the issue is my throat. Once again results came back normal. Yes, by this time I am frustrated. I begged my doctor please just look directly in my throat, he sent me for an ultrasound and then I went to have a laryngoscopy done which is awful by the way but I didn’t care I wanted answers. You can prob notice a pattern these two tests were normal too!!! How can a person feel this sensation and lump yet nothing helps or shows up. My last ent and test she told me to start relaxing my neck muscles cause it has a lot to do with the throat, she recommended speech therapy, certain exercises and a hot neck wrap like 3-4 times a day. Another issue I noticed are tonsil stones which I just started getting with all this the symptoms seem sooooo much like globus so I’m wondering is this my issue?!? She told me a tonsillectomy as an adult sucks and yes it could prevent stones some but she couldn’t guarantee the sensation would go away. I have the most horrible feeling under my chin like it gets so tight some days. I feel like I did it all now I’m living with this daily praying it’s not one little thing they missed. Sorry so long but that’s my journey and this stuff is no joke! Hope you find relief quicker than me if so please share!

Kim, I understand your frustration completely. I have had GS for over two years. I have all the tests also and everything is fine. After my endoscopy Dr said I have two small ulsers on my stomach but that those had nothing to do with my GS, since he along with three other drs said GS is from anxiety.  I won’t go on anti anxiety meds as I don’t believe in taking pills for everything. I have simply just learned to live with it. All the drs also told me it would go away someday. Well it had not. Sometimes it’s so bad I’m miserable other times it is there but not so bad. I forget I have it after a few glasses of wine.  It’s there I just don’t feel it as much. Maybe it’s because I am relaxed, who knows.  Drinking a lot of water especially cold water makes it so much worse but I am a very healthy eater and Believe in  drinking half your body weight in water, which I try to do every day.  I just deal with it. I come to this forum often hoping that one day someone will post something that will actually be a solution for all of us.  All we can do is hope. 🙏

Hi Dot1355 thank you so much for the response. I totally agree I’m constantly checking these boards in hopes for the same thing but reading everyone’s stories does help me some and realize  I’m not alone in all this. Yes yes yes on the cold water thing, I too try my best to drink a ton of water the issue is I love my water super cold and it kills me!!! I have noticed when I’m exercising or out and about busy I don’t notice it as bad prob because I’m not just sitting here worrying about it like I do on some days. I’m sure you understand it’s hard not to worry sometimes, I told my doctor do whatever we needed to make sure I’m ok I have a husband and 3 young children who need me and this has consumed my days with constant worry which sucks! You would think after years of globus some doctor or specialist would come up with something to help by now! Do you get that feeling up under your chin like I mentioned above?? It’s like a tightness in my muscles just an odd feeling. I too wish the best for everyone dealing with this crazy unexplainable issue!

Kim, I don't think I get that feeling under my chin so much but I do get at rare times that the stuck feeling changes sensations. Sometimes it is just like I have a pop corn piece stuck in my throat. Other times if feels like a phlem clog that I cannot swallow down, almost like severe post nasal drip. Sometimes if is so dry that I can't even talk unless I drink something and when it is dry like that I cough a lot. Other times it is so bad that it seems to radiate down into my chest. When I talk about it to other people they are horrified and can't imagine living with something like this day after day. But I have read everything. People on this forum or other forums I have read tried, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, exercise , therapy, with no luck.... Even pot, smoking it, eating it full gambit of trying things out to no avail. So nothing we can do but try to not think about it, maybe once in a while get some support here and updates on help, and just learn to live with it. I look at it this way sometimes, I have people in my life that are suffering with life threatening cancers and disease. This is not going to kill me and in reality it does not stop me from living my life to the fullest so if this is the worst I have to live with bring it on!! Just one way I look at it.. Although its tough to keep that positive and grateful attitude somedays. 😃

thanks for coming back to me it is an awful feeling and I'm sorry you are feeling it too.

I keep thinking yrs its globus because symptoms match but then i start analysing everything. I feel mine under my adams apple but am sure it felt higher up before. I know I wont settle until i get my referral sorted and have the camera down and they hopefully find nothing.

Fingers crossed we find relief from this soon. I found a warm bath helped me so it may help you too

      Hi Dot

I have the same sensation with my lump, somedays it feels like phlegm and others like a pill or food, it is reassuring that someone else feels the same.

The fact that it changes also reasures me it is nothing sinister but i still want to see an ENT to rule it out

That is def some good advice and a positive way to look at it for sure! My doctor did tell me that any type of mouth cancer is super aggressive so i would assume after 10 months i wouldve noticed anything major. The cough thing is an issue for me as well my hubby always notices me cough, or doing the clearing of my throat, sometimes at night i feel as though i cant breathe or swallow great. Like you said if we can just keep ourselves busy maybe we wont notice as much. As i said earlier if you do come across a magical remedy or trick id love to hear! GOOD LUCK!!
