Glue Ear

My son (aged 5 1/2) went to ENT yesterday after having a test at our local hospital in September and December '07. Yesterday tests showed his hearing had deteriorated in his right ear, up until now the problem was only in his left. We were expected to make a decision there and then about whether he will have gromits fitted and also whether his adenoids should be removed. Blown away we agreed, but 24 hours later I am unsure. Teachers inform us he is doing well at school, and that his work certainly isn't suffering. He participates and follows instructions without any problem. The only thing that really stands out is the volume on the TV having to be quite loud! I really don't know what to do, will it clear in time or should we help with the intervention of gromits? I don't want to put him through anything un-necessary, like any mum. Can any one advise if they felt like this and if so what did you choose to do?
