Gluteal spasms after RHR

It is going on more than 2 weeks following the surgery and each time I have had a physical therapy, the following day, I wake up with the worst pain from this buttocks spasm, same side as operation that radiates down the leg. The first time it happened, I was able to get an appointment and the doctor ruled out a dislocation and blood clot and prescribed muscle relaxants, which I took for 5 days. The following week, PT person came to the house to show me more exercises and again, the next day in the afternoon, the spasm began, the muscle relaxants did not work till about 5 hours later. It is an excruiating pain. The next session is to be in the pool, but am concerned about not wanting to go through this pain again. Has anyone else had this problem? I have read that these spasms can occur after surgery for a few weeks and I do hope that this will not continue. Thank you, Jody

I too experienced muscle spasms in buttocks and back of my leg. I took muscle relaxers and hot baths once I was able to soak.
The best way for my physical therapy was in the warm therapy pool. Consider doing gentle stretches before the exercises and take your muscle relaxer continually and always an hour before your therapy. See if that helps. Also, there are different brands of muscle relaxers so find the one that works best for you.
Does your blood work show that you have enough potassium?
Also check around to see if there is a gravity free treadmill for walking near you. It is the same as walking in water but you do not get wet.
If this pain persists, tell your doctor.
My best to you Susan!

Lasted not beyond 3 weeks for the first THR, and the second one cannot be compared to yours because the device came loose shortly after the surgery and a year and a half later I still suffer. Now 8 days from a revision.
Also my potassium level drops too low, so I have to keep up with that.
It will help you to take the muscle relaxers round the clock so you can break the cycle of spasms.
