GnRH analogue injection

I am 45, no sign of the menopause just yet, and have several fibroids and a couple of ovarian cysts which are causing me to bleed for too long each month (I say too long because it is making me anaemic). My consultant has given me various options, one of which is the GnRH analogue injection. I am interested to know if anyone on the forum has had any experience of this injection and if so how they got on with it. Also my doctor said I could have the injection once every 6 months until I'm 51, and yet the literature I've found says that you can only have the injection for a limited period (I think for a year).

Hello,
I have a GnRH injections, but monthly. I have had them for at least 2 years now (longer I think). I too thought you should really only take them for more limited times periods due to possible effects on bone density; however, I continue on them and specialist doesn't seem concerned. I was trying to get through to menopause as well. I never had any side-effects that I noticed or caused any irritation. I don't know how the 6 month shot is -- would be nice, however, not to run to my doctor every month.
Best wishes as you choose how to proceed.

I've have 6 months worth of Zoladex which I think is the same thing (brings on early menop symptoms & stops periods. I had side effects but no periods so that was one good thing about being on it. I put on weight though about 2 stone in 6 months & I also had horrible hot sweets & numbness in hands. However I had 12 months of Esmya broken down into 4 x 3 months & its affected my liver, its now been taken off the prescription list by the government. I flagged up that I had small liver cysts before they put me on it, now one is huge & in a really dangerous place, which will probably prevent me from having laprascopic surgery! With drugs it appears there is often a down side too as well as a benefit. Neither drug shrunk my fibroid, which is why I took them (& to stop bleeding) I have a prescription for another 6 months of Zoladex in my handbag & have been carrying it round with me since November, coping with heavy natural bleeding & reducing it by transenamic acid. The joys! I do believ you can get a six month injection rather than monthly, it's like a slow releasing thing, down side to that is once its in you can't stop it, should you decide you want to, whereas you have more control with the monthly ones should you want to stop or give your body a break.

Thanks Heather. I hadn't considered the drawback of the six month injection but it's something I definitely need to take into consideration.

I haven't had it but I remember my doctor gave it to me as an option as well. I remember him saying it can be used 2 times max (2 shots for 3 months each) -I am not from the UK, so the medications may be in different forms. He said you can take it for longer but you would take risk (regarding bone density).
Best wishes and good luck!
