Gobus for 3+ years, never knew to be anxious

Hi All – I 100% identify with the postings here. I have had the lump, thickness of swallow, tightness in throat, neck and chest and even sometimes total opposite – feeling dried out, to the point where it feels like someone poured concrete down my throat and it is drying. And my symptoms seemingly come and go with no direct cause and effect and the severity is all over the place. But I suffer at least a little every day at this point. I read about a condition called Tension Myositis Syndrome which speaks to pain in the back, butt, shoulders and neck that is caused by repressed anger and/or anxiety. I identified with this as well. And my acupuncturist says I have Plum Stone Throat, which seems to be exactly what Globus Hystericus is describing. However, it also is subconscious (though the Traditional Chinese Medicine description is not subconscious, but still – it is at a level not known to you.) And my issue is I never knew myself to be a worrier or suffer from anxiety. In fact, I was just the opposite – so mellow and easy going nothing seemed to bother me. So this also made sense that my problems were subconscious. My only conciuos anxiety is a direct result of the illness. But everyone here seems to be well aware of their anxiety and I am still trying to get in touch with mine, as I have been seeing a therapist. But is there anyone else who was unaware of being a worrier who had come discover they had GH? And of course, like everyone else – how did you get rid of it? It seems most people who “got rid of it” did so by it just going away on it’s own. Any solid experiences of steps taken for relief?

    Hi there

I too have suffered from GH for about 15 years now. I get feeling of choking, excessive mucous and that food doesn,t go down properly enough. Diagnosed as anxiety however I did have endoscopy 2/3 years ago and doc found haitus hernia. Like you I was not aware of my \"anxiety state\" which caused me to stop eating for 6 wks in 1992. These feelings do go away. I always reassure myself that its my mind cos when I wake up I feel fine but the minute I think of my GH its BACK bigtime!!

Try some relaxation therapy and accept that though you may not feel anxious you probably are.

I too am loving this site - I feel that I'm not alone and this \"GH\" is a genuine stress inducer never mind stress induced.

    Good Luck All.

I just got diagnosed with GH 2 days back and I'm relatively surprised as well that it was stress-related.

I've had the GH symptoms for over a month and am a regular smoker. However, there were actually a group of lumps at the back of my throat as well as the sides where the tonsils are, which freaked me out thinking it might be throat cancer.

Since I started taking my meds, and was extremely relieved that it isn't throat cancer, I've since felt a little better, and the 'lump\" and difficulty in swallowing no longer bothered me as much compared to a mere 2 days ago.

However he did mention that it is somewhat also related to extreme allergies, anyone have any information on that?

Hi David, I cannot tell you how pleased I am to read your problem, I too suffer with Globus Hystericus and am EXTREMELY furstrated with everybody trying to find some hidden or deep anxiety which is simply not there. There is no pattern to the problem and it is definitely not linked to when I am stressed. I have physio twice a week which seems to help. I have tried Hypnotherapy which helps for a couple of days at a time. I also have Diazepam for the really bad days. The best thing is physio though as they work with the problem rather that trying to find some hidden anxiety! Would be keen to hear if you have any other theories. I am just booked in to see a specialist in Globus and will let you know what he has to say. Good luck!
