Going crazy with ear noise after ear tests!!

Hi...I am new here to this forum but so glad I found it!! I have been diagnosed with meiniers for many years and my ears have been worse.

Recently I have had problems hearing h certain pitches or soft sounding people. I went to an ENT and he did a bunch of tests. Since these tests, my ears have been buzzing louder than usual. He said the tests would not effect my ears but it had been driving me crazy since. It took about 24hours to start and had been worse for the last 5 days. I am hoping they will eventually settle down!!

My ears seem to bother me more at night when everything is quiet. Also I find laying down makes them worse.

Oh yes..my tests revealed thatI have 30 per cent hearing loss and have permanent inner ear damage. Hearing aids were recommended to help stop the buzzing and to pick up the sounds better.

Anyone that can suggest if my buzzing will settle down or have any idea if hearing aids will help or not will be greatly appreciated!! Oh yes ...I do not take any special medication for my meiniers....but do take a decongestant and gravol sometimes.

Many thanks for help and guidance!!

Hi Sharon,  I have a hearing aid for my right ear but very rarely use it as my ear seems quieter without it and everything seems horrendously loud with it. I do take 16mg x 3 daily of Betahistine which keeps the ear pressure down. I did get noises and pin pricking in my head in bed so GP prescribed 10mg Amitriptyline which I take before getting into bed...I sleep sound all night. zzzzz

Hello Sharon. I take betahistine 3 times a day and that has controlled attacks of vertigo although I was unstable when first diagnosed. I have also found that cutting out salt reduces the tinnitus as I had this before I had Meniere’s and it’s not as loud now. I can only assume cutting out salt is the reason. I’ve also reduced caffeine intake to one cup a day but I’m not sure if this also contributed to quieter ears. IBe just gone along with what generally helps others. Nothing to lose!  Oh and no alcohol. That is a major trigger for me so my second alcohol free Christmas coming up. Hope this helps and you feel encouraged that there are things you can do to make life easier.

Many thanks for your response. It helps hearing from others that have the same thing. Sometimes I wonder if specialists know everything as they are not personally experiencing what we go through. Like the recent visit to ENT and said the testing would not make the ringing louder and it definitely has. Hope the noise calms down soon. But hearing from nice people like yourself really helps!! Thanks and wish you the best with your symptoms.

Hi Sharon, so sorry to hear your challenges, I would avoid a hearing aid. I have meneres and ended up buying a hearing aid early in the diagnosis and only used it for a few months because all it did was make the buzzing and echoing louder. Unfortunately, my hearing loss in my one ear started at 40% when first diagnosed and within 6 months went down to 80% loss. My doctor is a well known ENT at Duke University and I go see her again next week after my visit a month ago. My situation has gotten worse, so I am hoping she can suggest some other options. Good luck. Greg

Hi Greg...many thanks for your advice. I will probably avoid the hearing aids. They are costly and if they do not help with the noise in the ears, they would not be worth it.

I hope you find answers soon for your symptoms! Let me know how your appointment goes!! Take care and thanks for your advice!!

If you don't take anything and you can hear fairly well you are lucky....not sure why the ears going crazy after tests......if you don't get much tinnitus hearing aids may help....some   audiologists will allow you to try hearing aids for a month trial.....ask around good luck

Hi..I fo have a lot of noise ( like a bunch of crickets) in my ears. I was told that I can hear but not certain toned. That's where the 30 per cent of hearing loss comes from. It would be good to do a trial run first with the hearing aids before purchasing as I am reading more negative feedback for them. Thank you for your advice!!

Hello. I thought I would add my experience to the hearing aids discussion. I have had 50% loss both sides before Meniere’s and have worn aids for 10 years. Not nhs as they are not good enough. Without them I wouldn’t be able to have normal conversation. During an attack of vertigo my hearing becomes very distorted and people sound like parrots squawking. That’s very irritating but after the attack hearing returns to my normal. I have loss in the upper ranges which is what happens with general age related hearing loss. This could change of course but at the moment I’m grateful to be stable. My audiologist tuned the aids to my individual loss and let me listen to normal sounds for a while. I didn’t have to purchase them at that point so this is something you could try if you start to struggle.

Hi Christine...I was wondering if you have noticed any difference with the noise in your ears from MD with hearing aids. My ears sounds like a bunch of crickets all time and not sure if the hearing aids would help or not. Trying hearing aids before actually purchasing is what I would try to do. Thanks for your advice!!

      Hi Sharonl

i have a hearing test every year and that’s when I find out if I gave further loss. My aids are then adjusted. If my tinnitus is louder than usual the aids wouldn’t magnify this as the noise is internal but I have to put up with that as I can’t hear much in the high ranges without. I have occasionally removed the one on the side with Meniere’s in the evening if my husband is watching tv as the sound can be annoying if it’s distorted. I can manage with one. Thankfully my tinnitus has reduced to a quiet wine on one side and a low rumble on the Meniere’s side. I put this good fortune down to giving up salt. Long may it continue. I have had that clicking sound like crickets that you get along with a dinner gong and a very loud noise like bagpipes!  Panic ensues along with a racing heart. I understand your discomfort. Very wearying.

Most with MD lose the low tone hearing...not sure how long you have had it......low frequencies for me have dissapered so in my bad ear it sounds like an old am radio.  water is also good and used in Asia for treatment 64 ml of water a day or four bottles  this MD reacts different on different peopel so see what works and stick with it....good luck to you
