Going out for drinks / crampy IBS question...

Posted , 4 users are following.

Got IBS-C  and had it for a year now after a terrible gut infection and am prone to cramping.

Going out and socialising has been a challenge for the past few months, becuase all of my friends drink every weekened. sad sad

Taking Fructose intolerance into account, is there anything I can have, like even a glass or two of something, like Vodka/Carbonated water, Gin with Tonic?

Any recommendations would be great, coz I want to have at least a drink or two sometimes (not ever week) and don't want to feel crampy and miserable a few days after that.

    Hi

Just wondering have you been diagnosed with frusose intolerance? Was this after the gut infection ? What type of infection did you have? Did your bowel hanits change after your infection - and what does your doctor say?

Re alcohol it isn't good with anyone with IBS - suggest you research on line to see if there's anything you can drink - research what alcohol is gentlest on the stomach,

    Goodluck I know it's frustrating

I haven't been diagnosed with fructose intolerance, but whenever I ate a piece of candy or something like that (until very recently), my stomach would feel weird and crampy.

I had a really bad stomach flu with 101-104 fever for 2 or 3 days and ever since then, it's been like this. I always had a minor C problem, but with enough fiber, it was always okay and I could eat everything.

Ever since that infection, though, it's been full-blown IBS and I would get a lot of C and my body would get rid of fat, making me thinner/leaner with cramps if I ate any wheat or dairy mainly.

The doc says it's IBS and with meds it's managable. Post-infectious IBS could go away in 5-7 years, or one could be stuck with it for life. sad

    Candy

I am at a bit of a loss, for what you could drink.

When I had been out on the town or at a Party I would try a Egg Flip with Lemonade, a long drink with a touch of bandy and egg. The best lips are poduced in Holland. The drink in mild in alchohol.

I would sometimes have a Dry Martinie with a dash of tonic or Lemonade ? if I remember again a weak drink that you could sip

Beer and Lager may upset your tummy I suppose, although I live o the Scottish Border and I like a strong beer and a treble Malt Whisky, although in your situation that may have to much body.

Sometimes I drink a Pear Cyder, they seem smoother than Apple Cyder so you could try that. They are also making cyders of vaious soft fruits, you could try that. If as you say fructose is a problem, ask your GP, or Specialist and see what they suggest.

Thanks, but those aren't exactly available at most lounges/places my friends hango out at.

What about Vodka or Gin with carbonated water...is that known to cause problems?

Basically all alcohol is bad for IBS as alcohol irritates the digestive system. You will have to try different things and see what works for you. Some people react badly to fizzy drinks, In which case beer/lager/fizzy mixers are going to be bad for you and wine may be better. But if you don't react to fizzy drinks then clear spirits would probably be better.
