going out of my mind with worry. please help!

I posted on here earlier about chickenpox. It's going about at the moment and I haven't had it as a child. Both my sisters did and I was around them all the time and never picked it up. I'm now 24. I did go to my doctor today and explained. He said that if I did get it it wouldn't be serious and he told me not worry about it. Around the time my sisters had it I was sick as in vomiting but that's it. I'm so so scared because I've read if you get it as an adult u can die or have serious complications. Please help I'm feeling sick with worry and I have anxiety as it is and this isn't helping. Also I have a two year old child who hasn't had them either.. please help x

Try not to worry I know it's diffcult when you have anxiety. The face that you never picked it up from your siblings as a child, I doubt you would catch it as an adult. My brother had it as an adult, he recovered fine it wasn't that serious x

The fact is that chicken pox is always going around. Your child will most likely catch it at some point and you will then be exposed to it anyway (remember, by your current logic, you would want your child to catch it so that they don't face the same worry as you in adulthood). My point is that you need to try and calm down because this is largely out of your control. Also, chicken pox is not dangerous for most adults. If you're pregnant, it would be a concern. Some other people develop complications, but I think that's more those with weaker imune systems.

Just keep telling yourself that this is the anxiety blowing things out of proportion, as anxiety does well. You are catastrophising. Perhaps write down all of the possible things that could happen (including not getting chicken pox and getting chicken pox and being fine). This will help you to see that there are many more potential outcomes other than certain death. It usually works for me :-)

    All the best xx
