Going with Focal Laser Ablation for BPH

Ok, I have decided, I am going in the next 21 days for FLA. I have picked dr. k if the schedule of my wife's treatments can allow it along with his schedule. He is busy with some complicated PCa cases as well as talking about a partially self funded clinical trail scenario for BPH patients.

If I cannot line up with him, his associate is Walser and I will get him as they still work together at the same hospital. Maybe I can get both involved and get a double bang for my buck. I will let you know soon.

I have been off the site for awhile, so temporarily out of touch. I have a list of the codes from Dr K. I had a couple hours conversation through a couple different contact people at United Health Care. Naturally, the first thing you have to do is meet your deductibles. Then your insurance needs to cover "Out of Network". If your insurance does cover the O/N, there is usually another deductible just for that after your basic deductibles are met. One person that was my account rep for UHC for Delta Airlines said, I could get about almost $8 k back after all the deductibles. Funny thing is I have not heard a word back since, left messages, No Response. Sound familiar?

John you are so far out now with no issues, that is like you never had BPH. I had a short call with Dr K the other day. I wanted to find out about if I should have my normal blood tests now. I am due for my annual physical next week and wanted to know about the blood work. He said I should be at least 6 months plus for that. I told him how easy it is to forget what it felt to have BPH. You get very complacent sometimes when it is working as near normal.

If someone can find the secret to getting the insurance companies to start paying for the best BPH procedure out there. I am going to.drop a business card off to my GP for Dr K and his procedure. He is the one that sent me to the 2 Uros I see. I will let him know that our procedure will be The new Gold Standard.

How is your dad and the double play going? That is brave of him, but it could be better than having to go through the knee replacement twice at his age. My mom will be 94 in a month, had a knee replacement 2 years ago and open heart valve repair just after. She swims everyday now and walks her dog everywhere. So, if you are use to staying active, who knows how long we can go.

Hope you are continuing to improve and only about a month away from retirement. I hope your wife plays golf and likes fishing, or she may have a hard time finding you.

Hey Mike, good to hear you are back. Yes I think the insurance payments would help a lot of guys who lean toward PAE instead of FLA. Of course we still need long term results on FLA of at least a year but an issue with PAE is that he body immediately begins to re-grow the passage way for blood to flow again around the blockage to the embolized tissue in the prostate so PAE has a hard time lasting for many years as the solution. The jury is still out on that one (PAE) also but many men have reported that the BPH symptoms come back after their BPH. We have quite a group going now in the "K Club". I am thinking we need to start a new thread that where each of us give a report on how treatment and recovery went with us. I had a call from my dentist last week as he has another patient who had BPH so bad he could not stay in the dental chair long enough for the dentist to complete his treatment on him. He told him about my BHP and FLA and ask if the man could call me. Of course I told him yes.

On the greedy side of things, although I am very very pleased, and I would pay a lot more than I did for these results, I am going to start an effort to recover at least something from medicare on the payment of my procedrue. I am not sure how this will work out but this would be nice to get some money back and to start the ball rolling in the government medicare area for all the men who are not on private insurance. Maybe I get nowhere but it is time to try. I kind of have the same attitude as I had about being the first to trying this FLA treatment and that worked out quite well so far.

As far as my DAD! He gets out of the 14 day re-hab jail that I have in him later today. I am picking him up and taking him to his home and staying with him to evaluate his real condition through Monday. The first week, I have never seen him so depressed. He felt he really made a mistake and down and out. Now, two weeks later he is climbing stairs, has free run of the re-hab hospital is working out in either PT or Occupational therapy for 3.5 hours each day. I told him I now have a list of tests he must pass for me to go home and leave him alone. He must: go to bed, get up and pee and return to bed, dress himself, feed his dog, prepare and eat his meals, do dishes, take vitamins, sit on his porch, walk out to get the mail and look at his garden, before I will leave this next week. He claims he can do all that now on his walker. We will see. I am currently planning on me staying at least a week and he says NO WAY.  He has to doctor's appointments next week and he has made plans to go play bridge Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. He loves me but wants me gone. I ask "how are you getting there'? He said, "I have friends". Cindy is taking me to the Doctor, Michelle is taking me to the store for a grocery run, Lisa is taking me to Bridge Games. And, since he is a driver in his town for Uber, he says his UBER Buddies will give him a ride anywhere until he can drive. Uber opened up in Tyler TX in mid 2016 and he signed up to be a driver. I told him NO WAY he is just to old and I was sure he would get turned down. But they took him and his black BMW right away. He says he makes new friends, has a ball and stays busy. I told him he better be careful with all those lady friends now or his freedom will end.

Short answer, he seems to be doing great for double knee replacement 3 weeks ago. His therapist all are ready for him to go home as they say he works them too hard.

Glad you are back, call me and let's catch up.

Thanks Rick, he is doing really well for 18 days post surgery I thought it was 3.5 weeks but he had the surgery on the 30th of May and he went home last night. He corrected me on the surgery date. I just got confused.

I took him grocery shopping this afternoon and we went out to eat lunch today as I am checking off the list of things he needs to do for me to go home. He has hay fields that need the second cutting so I guess I will ride a tractor all day tomorrow and miss the final round of the U.S. Open. Oh, well, he is worth it and glad to have him doing so well. He will be hard to keep up with in about three more weeks.

      Thanks, John

i had my FLA on June 7th with DR. K. My prostate size was over 180 cc with a very large median lobe and a protein cyst that also was above the median lobe. My procedure was 31/2 hours with 9 ablations. I was given Cipro, Uribel and prednisone. I only took the prednsone for 3 days due to swelling in my ankles. I wore the Foley for 8 days. When I removed the Foley I started urinating normally within 10 hours. I did take one ibuprofen before bed.The experience with Dr.K was as advertised. His engineering background shows that he takes each case as a problem to be solved. This outlook I believe separates him from other doctors.

      Hi Steve,

John was the pioneer, I was the one with the largest prostate at 176cc with a large median lobe, but yOU broke that. I only had 8 ablatiions, but 3 1/2 hours as well. I was conscious for the whole procedure, due to slightly elevated blood pressure, but mainly because my oxygen level was between 96 and 98%. Samantha had to take care of me the whole time. I just hit the 9 week Mark yesterday, April 6. I am an engineer as well, and Dr K converses and stratigises like one. He said he learned more in engineering school than med school. Steve, are you part of the Clinical Trial? If so, do you know what number you are?

I had my Foley in for 8 days and clamped off for 2 plus hours, took the clamp off, sucked the air out and peed it right out. I am like I never had BPH right now.

I believe we ALL feel the same about Dr K. I just talked to him 2 days ago. John is trying to keep a Dr K Club membership. This is definetly going to be The New Gold Standard. I have not heard of a single patient of his, that has not been helped by this procedure. If we all can help Dr K with his Clinical Trail approval, I sure hope the road ahead picks up some more sponsorship, financially and medical power support to get insurance Approval would be the ultimate for the future of BPH sufferers.

Keep on keeping on and the best of luck through your recovery.
