Steroid injections worked well for me and allupurinol is effective at the correct dose but it may take some months to build up to the right dose.
Attacks usually last a couple weeks but I have had them lasting 3 months.
Avoid high purine foods including carbonated drinks and caffeine. Check inter web for the trigger foods.

I now take Enalapril daily for my pressure. I also was put on steroids for two weeks. My doctor wanted me to go back on steroids but I refused. Now I take allopurinol 300 m.g. daily sometimes it irritates my stomach but then I skip a day and I make sure I eat first before I take it. I also had to follow a strict diet, for instance, I stopped eating red meat( 2 yrs. prior to my attack) beans, shrimp, lobster, shell fish, and some vegetables like spinach and beer. Basically, you have to try eating what works for you until you get the uric acid in your system under control or lowered.
Ask your doctor to draw your blood and test your uric acid to see where your levels are and then go from there with your diet. I feel sorry for anyone who suffers with gout. Neil, I hope things work out for you and I hope you feel better real soon!
