granuloma annulare

About 3 years ago I developed a severe case of Shingles.   A year after that I came down with Granuloma Annulare.  First it started on the inner thighs, and has been spreading ever since.  Huge red spots cover my inner, outer, and back of thighs.  Now it is on my lower back and buttocks also.

It is strange to me that when I wake up in the morning the spots are pale, but as the day progresss they become an angry purple.

I am now 69, and have tried various natural treatments to no avail.  I do have violent leg cramps if I do not take magnesium citrate several times a day, but I have had them since my 40's.  I heard other members mention them.

I was diagnosed with this condition several months ago.  Started on my inner thighs and back of my neck last summer which looked like a bad sunburn.  Finally had a biopsy to confirm it is Granuloma Annular.  Was given Prednisone to take down the inflammation but could not tolerate this medication.  It has now become generalized on my legs and top of my feet which are very sore.  I am prone to skin conditions so until there is a remedy out there I must live with is.  Not happy.

Hi, So sorry you've found yourself part of this club.  A nasty mess this GGA can be.  I've found that foods are a source of my issues.  I agree - pale in the AM and worse during the day.  I've had to elimate a lot of foods.  Started with Gluten and then found many more that I've got an issue with...tomatoes, potatoes, fish, spices, coffee.  The list seems endless.  I have seen great improvement over the past year.  But must warn you if you are going to eliminate foods, it will take much longer than you might think.  Figure a year of being "free" of the problem foods to determine if it's helping.  I've seen many people who say they have gone gluten free for a few weeks or months and then stopped, but going Gluten free is much harder than most people realize, it's not just stopping bread.  There is gluten in EVERYTHING.   Shampoos, face cream, cat litter, lip balms, the list goes on and on and every little exposure I get sets me back.  I'm also very sensitive to latex and there are tons of foods associated with that as well.   I've found I'm very low on many B vitamins as well has having a Glucose issue.  Diabetes runs in my family and even though I've been tested many times and I come back with Normal on blood work, a Micro Nutrient test shows that I have a glucose Intolerance issue. I'm working on that now with supplements and diet and I'm hoping the rash continues to clear.  There doesn't seem to be any one issue for this but if you had Shingles, perhaps your Auto Immune system is messed up and reacting to something you are eating or being exposed to.  Histamines and Sulfites are a culprit for many.  Good luck and keep us all posted as you find things that help.  One person saved me when noting that coffee seemed to be an issue for her and it turns out it is for me as well.  The rash has improved a lot (not my sweet disposition) but the skin looks better.  Good luck and chin up.  We're all pulling fo you.

I was diagnosed by biopsy.  The only tretment I will take would be natural.  The only thing I ever heard that worked was Chinese herbs, but no one seemed to know what they were.   So thank you.  I also read on dermatologist prescribed niacinamide 500 mg 3 x a day and his patient was cured in six months so I am trying it.  I will be looking for a source for the Vine eSSENCE.

One thing I did notice, I try to get a little sun every day for vitamin d, and I rolled up my pant leg, within less than five minutes my GA was a bright raised purple.  I know I am very photosensative,so I won't expose it to sunlight any further.  (I thought sun might be good for it I was wrong)

What about dental work/mercury as a cause? Just joined these discussions cuz trying to find a cure or treatment and finding what we have in common might help, saw these reasons on another discussion
