Grapefruit + Other Fruit Concerns...!
Posted , 6 users are following.
So I know that grapefruit is apparently a no no for many medications - and that isn't really an issue for me since I don't eat grapefruit.
How about other citrus fruit? Like oranges and lemons and limes? Or even apples?
Also - I noticed that sometimes grapefruit extract is used in skin care products. I checked the things I use and I don't see any grapefruit extract in the ingredients, but if grapefruit extract is listed in a skincare product - should I steer clear? Idk if it can actually enter your body if it's just topical.
Sorry if this seems crazy - I can have bad health anxiety flare up at times and this is the latest fear on my mind.

Ok, because I read that some oranges have the same ingredient that grapefruit does.
I would assume skin care is OK if it contains an orange extract or other citrus extract.. but idk, my anxiety is making it worried it isn't.
Gah, I hate my anxiety when it does this.

Other citrus fruits should be fine!
As for the skin care products, they're external so I wouldn't worry about using those!

I figured skin products are fine - just got paranoid thinking they would be absorbed into the blood.

Grapefruit makes your tablet dosage too high...that's what they chemicals in the grapefruit does....

Skin care is irrelevant. Its topical.

The grapefruit discovery might be “new”. And it goes for a lot of other medications too I think. Maybe the actual warning is if you go on some grapefruit craze for dieting or something.

I suppose if its not on the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your particular medicine, then it should be fine. Its always best to check your doctor or pharmacist to be on the safe side too - though I wonder if they'd know.
Just had a quick look online and it says most foods do not interact with Citalopram, though don't significantly alter your intake of grapefruit (as you say, probably if you're on a grapefruit diet)
I'd consider yourself safe.
A very interesting post indeed x

You said you did eat grapefruit while on Citalopram and had no ill effects? (Just curious - I actually have no desire to eat grapefruit lol).

Uh, so I did some more looking and apparently 7 Up & Sierra Mist contain grapefruit juice?? I never knew that - I occasionally drink one of those when my stomach was upset.
Freaking out now :///

Yes I ate grapefruit whilst on Citalopram and had grapefruit juice, orange juice, put limes or lemons in cooking and was fine. I don't remember any adverse reactions with anything I ate or drank at the time.
I'm sure if it was a really serious issue then it would be publicised everywhere for our safety.
I really don't think its anything to worry about - you know I even drank alcohol when on meds and though not recommended, I had wine or beer when with friends or out for a meal. I was on meds for 16 years so wasn't about to go tee-total for that length of time.
I think if you have everything in moderation (and don't live completely off grapefruits lol) then it should be fine.

Yeah, I know - the internet can be terrible at times. One site says you should do this, another site says the opposite - which is horrible for us with bad anxiety.
