ive had graves disease fir almost 2 years now. i was unable to get it under control, so i had surgery to remove my thyroid 6 months ago. i have still been running a little on the hyper side. since i was diagnosed with graves ive suffered from extreme muscle pain in my upper back, neck and shoulders. anybody else experiencing the same? also im extremly tired all the time even since my thyroid removal. just wondering if this is normal as im starting to think i have fibromyalgia now as my symptoms mimic that.

Hi Brenda, muscle pain caused by abnormal thyroid hormone levels subsides after your thyroid levels normalize. It is a gradual process, in my case it took about 3 months.

If you have not done it already then I would recommend discussing it with your endocrinologist and GP. It is not normal to have continuous muscle pain while your thyroid levels are ok. Btw, thyroid surgery can sometimes affect the parathyroid glands. If your Calcium levels are off, it could cause muscle pain as well. Best to have it checked.

HI SAM, my calcium levels have been checked and are in normal range. It has been 6 months since my thyroid surgery, i have yet to level out, however, my TSH is the closest its been to normal in 2 years .306. I still cant understand the muscle pain and extreme fatigue.?? I do not like to think this but I am beginning to think possible fibromyalgia?

unfortunately doctors dont seem to understand all the symptoms that go along with thyroid disease, i have found i have to be my own doctor at times even with my levothyroxine dose. in APRIL my TSH was 4.230 so increased thyroid meds and in just 4 weeks TSH was .138 and my doctor told me to stay on same dose and check again in 3 months!!! i was having symptoms of hyper, anxiety, headaches, dizziness and TOLD him i need to decrease me dose and would like bloodwork checked again in a month due to my extreme sensitivity to thyroid medication. doctors make me more frustrated as they have no answers to my symptoms!

I had graves and was going all over the place. i did not have my thyroid removed. i am afraid to have my neck cut open, but i did have my thyroid shut down. i am not taking any medication. i am having the same symptoms you are having. i also have copd, so I really know what you are going through. Hang in there and consult with your endocrinologist, he needs to know what's going on. I pray things get better for you!

HI JACK, i totally understand your frustration! i had problems with weight gain myself and seems doctors to care to address this or make excuses such as getting older not enough sleep etc. i have never had a problem with weight gain til graves disease (in the beginning i initially lost weight of course) i have put that back on and then some. i have had to decrease my calories to 1000-1300 a day and i have started to bike about 3-4 times a week, totaling 25ish miles a week to just MAINTAIN!
