Graves Disease - Weight Gain

Posted , 2 users are following.

I was diagnoised with hyperthyroidsim - Graves Disease a few months ago. When I first started getting the symptoms I lost about 10 lbs. Since then I have gained all the weight back plus and additional 20 lbs. I am currently taking 10 mg of Methimazole, 1/2 a pill twice a day for almost 2 months. I've gained so much weight in a short amount of time it has become extremly depressing. I try to work out, but I am so tired and do not have the energy. I try to diet but I am constantly hungry.

Is the weight gain due to the medication? Is there anything I can do to stop the weight gain? Will I ever be able to lose the weight if I continue to have this disease?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

this does sound like a significant weight gain and i would suggest that you ask the doctor who prescribed the meds to you. for example, is this an expected resp[onse to starting treatment? is the dose correct ?

meanwhile if you're constantly hungry this is gonig to be tough for you to lose the weight. try to have lots of cucmber/carrots/celery etc as snacks and try not to have calories laden things in the home. that might help to minimise the weight gain from munchies...

i hope that this gets sorted out for you.

I have a follow up appointment with my doctor next week. This will be the first visit after taking my medication and re running my blood work to see the results. I will definitely ask her if the weight gain is related to the medication and dosage.

Thanks for your reply dambudzo! I'll stock up on all the healthy munchies to get me by throughout the day.

good luck with it all. if you live in the northern hemisphere then it might be tough as it gets colder and darker. fill up on liquids as well - but not sweet things - herbal teas? normal tea/coffee with skimmed or semiskimmed milk? lemon tea? water?

write down all the signs and symptoms that you have noticed recently so that you don't forget anything during your appointment.
