My Father had it 15 years ago. I thought it was rather old technology these days, supplanted by innovations like focused laser ablation (FLA)

There are lots of reports about greenlight laser surgery in this forum.  One of the best is a post with the title "Pre & Post GreenLight Laser Surgery Journal"   Search on greenlight and you will find it.  My recommendation to you is to only consider the posts from people who have actually had this procedure.  You will find many posts bad-mouthing it  from guys who have not actually had the procedure but are just repeating things they've heard or are opposed to any turp-like procedure.  Greenlight has been around a while but there have been improvements, mainly in the power of the laser.  I don't believe it's considered "old technology" by many.

Would you choose Helop or Button Turp over GL?

      Thank you

I believe the XPS system is the latest generation which improves upon previous versions.

I don't really know at this point and fortunately, I do not have to make a decision at this time.  With pretty much any procedure you can find satisfied and dissatisfied recipients.  I think you have to rely somewhat on your urologist since he's the one who knows what's what.  OTOH, if your urologist still prefers the traditional TURP, it's worth getting another opinion.  Good luck.

The only urologist who really knows what's what is the urologist who has personally undergone the procedure himself.

Using that standard, the vast majority of urologists (assuming most are under 60) wouldn't know what's what.  If you don't trust your urologist, find another one.  If you're not happy with the procedures he offers (e.g., TURP), get another opinion.  And by all means, don't make a decision based on what you read in a forum like this.  As I read just recently, "the plural of anecdote is not data."

My uro who removed a 18mm bladder stone 2.5 years ago only does Button Turp. He also does Urolift but my prostate is too large.

I now have 6, 1cm bladder stones that need removing and need to decide a prostate procedure.

Went to another uro who wants to first remove the stones and then discuss a procedure to decrease the prostate. After the appt I realized a few things:

      1) He said it takes years for stones to appear and the first uro didn’t remove all the stones. According to the CT scan report there was only one stone.  He was incorrect.

      2) Why two procedures when stone removal and a prostate procedure can be performed at the same time? He wants to get paid for two procedures?

He did say he prefers less invasive procedures unlike Turp. And he believes it’s better to have another minimum invasive every few years similar to women who need Botox retreatments every few years.

I have an initial appointment with a uro who does Holep at a University medical center.

      Sincerely,

      Confused

My guess about 2 procedures is he feels the length of time and perhaps trauma to the urethra is too great to do both at the same time.  I have had 2 transurethral bladder tumor resections and although I had no problems post-op, I did have a catheter for 3-4 days each time.  The 2nd time, they removed the catheter about 3 hrs after the procedure but I couldn't pee so they put it back in and I went home.  Good luck.

I had GL in 2004 and that hospital  then had three newer laser machines. Although happy with GL they later went over to HoLep (2013) as it has the advantage of saving tissue to check for cancer cells. HoLep needs a longer training period..

GL worked for me as it did for two friends who had it around the same time with different urologists.

They probably have not been told that it is the later version.

Ask him which procedure he would recommend for his father.
