Groin pain after Hip Replacement

Posted , 9 users are following.

I have been having pain in my groin like a pulled muscle after my total hip replaement, I am over 2 years post op. I can put my hand directly where the pain is, as if i am pushing onto the pain. I am due to have my other hip replaced later this year. I am waiting to go back to the specialist in the next couple of weeks, any idea's would be appreciated.

Is this new groin pain, Tony, or have you had it since your THR? There are many possible reasons for groin pain, as a google search will demonstrate! What kind of specialist are you going to see? Hopefully you can get an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

I have been having these pains on and off since the op, I thought it was muscular and would just go away. The slightest thing can kick it off, by just getting out of a chair or stepping off a kerb.

I am going to the specialist who carried out the surgery at the Gobowen hospital in Oswestry.

Good. If it has lasted this long, it's obviously not going to go away on its own and needs treatment. Hope the orthopedic surgeon who did your THR will be open to really trying to figure out what is wrong. I had to go to a new OS in a different practice to get a diagnosis for me after my original surgeon kept on dismissing my pain and limping as weakness that needed PT to improve, even 6 months after the op. I need a new surgery for repairs to gluteal tendons and to explore and see what else might be wrong. Most people will NOT need surgery for an issue like this, but you do need a doctor to take you seriously and do the physical exam, testing and scans that can accurately diagnose your problem.

All the best to you, Tony!

    Hi Tony

I had both hips replaced last year, the right in January and the left in October. All I can tell you is that although the first op helped me initially, as soon as I started to walk again without crutches I started to get pain and couldnt walk far as the pain in my unoperated hip would start. Although you have one new hip, your movements compensate for the pain in the old hip so you can get associated pain in different parts of your body.

I looked after my 2 grandchildren (7 and 4) all of last week and although tired by Friday we had a wonderful week, going to the park/walks every day and Whipsnade zoo on Thursday. I could never have done this a year ago.

Hope you get a date for your other THR soon and you will then be on the road to full recovery.

    Take care

Thanks very much Linnet, I am having my left hip replaced in November. But before I do I would like to get this groin pain sorted first, I am being told it could be the tendon in my groin. Fingers crossed.

My chief symptoms of my need for a THR were groin pain and referred knee pain. I suggest your groin pain is to do with your need for another THR. Talk to your specialist about it when you see him

Hi Tony. 2 years yipes.. I had 2nd THR Jan 11. this one got messed up. they cracked my femur?(top leg bone) when they drove in the prostetic. it had to be taken back out and a much larger one put in, and banded in 2 spots. since then I have had tremendous groin pain. PT just wrecked me. a steroid injection into the tendon 2 weeks ago didnt do anything.

friday up coming i am supposed to have an mri. then predicably - next tuesday, i am supposed to be scoped - I think they mean CUT, my iliopsoas tendon. i dont know what symptons you have, but - i still walk with a cane after 4 months,i cant pick my leg up - like to get in the car. the groin is tendor in several spots. sounds wierd but, the immkediate groin ares is warm to the touch. I walk with a waddle w/o the cane. the big thigh muscle is always sore. I cant lift my leg high enouigh to get it up a stair, so i go up one by one, m,y other leg first.i read that if the pain goes down the leg, it is a nerve, but if it is centrallized in the groin after thr, it is the tendon. I am not sure myself, if I shouldnt get a 2nd opinion, from someone other than the doctor who did the surgury. any of this stuff familiar to your situation? by the way,my first thr, went great.. this one the prostetic is huge compared to the other one. this one also has 4 screws in the socket section. it looks like a war zone... does it ever ease up one you? like if you really take it easy for a while? good luck, we both need it...

Captain, I think that getting a second opinion is always good. Either it will confirm the course that your original surgeon wants to take, or it will give you new information about your condition with possible alternatives for treatment. I went for a second opinion at 6 months post-THR when my original surgeon was unable to diagnose and treat the reasons for my continued severe limp and thigh/hip pain, and I am so glad that I did! Will be getting treatment and surgery from new orthopedists now.

Hi I went back to surgeon this week, had to have xrays and bloods taken. I am going for a bone density scan , they are hoping my new hip hasn't come loose, if that comes back fine they are going to take me to theatre to draw some fluid ooy of the hip to see if it is being rejected I suppose. I do hope not. We will have to take it from there.

      I will keep you informed.
