Two week x-rays Everything was fine...Have had the normal pain at the incision and thigh .. Doing excercises called for by PT and now walking unaided...recently have had off and on groin pain....is not constant but comes and goes... Thoughts? PT says it is referred pain and gave me an excercise to help as well as using moist steam towels... Thoughts?

Hi Thomas your recovery is spot on and I wish you continued recovery & on to  a improved lifestyle and mobility. It's normal to have pain after surgery, healing  has its ups and down and in general you will be in better shape in no time.

Take one day at a time and don't over do follow PT and you will have a great summer ahead to look foreword too!

    Cheers 😁

We’re all different in our recoveries so sure can’t be the expert but when groin pain began around 3 weeks, my dr told me to quit the exercises & that I was probably also overdoing things. I wasn’t prescribed PT when going home from surgery but given exercises like the ones we learned in the hospital PT classes. I did as the dr said and the groin pain went away after a week or so. I walked for exercise  but didn’t resume the exercises until 6-8 wks & only 1/2 the repetitions and all was good! Best of luck on your recovery!

Thank you Sue and that's what I am going to do.. Most of the excercises are the ones they showed us in the hospital and my Ortho doesn't start physical therapy outpatient til 3 months after surgery. All I am going to do going forward is my walking and be smart with that. .rest and ice when necessary and try to get decent sleep.. Got to trust the process....

Yes, I agree, take it steadily. I had a very straightforward recovery, and I did loads of walking,  but I did use a crutch until week 6. All the best, Judith

Hi Thomas, i am 64 and had my posterior hip op on January 13th and you are far in advance of me , I am still using 2 crutches and experiencing pain from deep inside the hip, guess we will have to be patient.

    Hi Thomas,

I'm at 9 weeks post op and swimming 30 mins and cycling for an hour and am pain free whilst doing the exercise and after. But  I have a dull groin ache which I notice when i'm lying down in bed most.. I did have bad groin pain before the op which is what made me make the decision to have the replacement. I'm sure in my case its just the groin healing.

The other thing I find is that doing straight leg lifts whilst lying down is still a bit painful in the groin and It is hard to raise my leg up any distance. I've read about other people having this problem, don't know why, and my physio said don't do this exercise.

Hi Thomas. I had that pain in the groin area. It is the abductors and after doing all the stretch exercises, it has gone away. For weeks we are told not to cross legs and keep them straight with pillows to reduce chance of dislocation, so they get tight and lazy. I had that radiating pain as well as my knee throbbing, my toes tingling, my calves aching and once I started stretching and the nerves going back to normal, it all set back to normal in about 3 months. Now I just have a tightness , like a band around my thigh and it is tight where the implant and ring hold my femur. It is weird at first but one gets used to it. My glutes also are rebelling as most of my physio is to strengthen them. As long as I can walk and have my independence, I will acknowledge and move on. Sounds like you are doing very well. Good luck.

Thank you for the encouragement.. This is a journey... It is great to be able to reach out to people who have been through it.. Yes starting my fourth week and no walking aids and my excercises and walking are moving forward...Guess it is going to take a while for everything to the stiffness and soreness to go away but better than that grinding bone on bone...I have not been able to sleep in the bed with any success to speak of so the recliner has been my home...Are you still on the meds?

Hi Thomas, I am on just a mild anti inflammatory. Magnesium with calvium three times a day and that helps with the Charlie horsed I get in my calves. I only take a Tylenol when I need to. No more morphine and I feel great. Sleeping 6 hrs in my bed.

Just been tough sleeping in the bed. Think it is more anxiety than anything. ..feared of falling out of the bed...lol....was on.percocet and scaled down to Tylenol 3 but codeine made me too nauseated. .just doing extra strength Tylenol now...

As much as the strong pain pills help in early stages of healing after surgery, they did affect me in terms of balance and made me feel kind of fuzzy/foggy at times. After stopping them, I took extra strength acetaminophen (Tylenol) and it helped without the added negative effects.

I sleep on my back with a small pillow between my legs. Keeps me in one place while in bed. No issue with falling out of bed.

      All takes time.
