Groin Pain when Exercising

Hi all,

My physio gave me some new exercises to do when I saw her on Monday, they are:  leg raises, leg extensions and another I don't know what it is called but I am meant to lay on my side with my back against a hard surface so I don't roll back or forward, bend my legs slightly and raise the top (operated) side with a band around my knees for resistance.  I can't do the last one like that as it really hurts (and not good hurts) so I put the resistance band around my knees and lay on my back with my knees bent and push my operated knee out (not too far).

All these are fine except for the leg raises.  She said to start with a 1kg weight on my ankle and build up to 2 kg but I struggle to do it without any weight and it really hurts in my groin when I do it.  I'm perservering and will ask her when I see her next week but was wondering if anyone else is experiencing anything similar?

I am also keeping up with my squats and butt clenches as I find these really help.

sounds as if the physio is giving you too much to do at once, i myself have been very lucky my surgeon doesn't believe in physio, say walking is the best medicine, and yes if i do too much i get back ache and pain in groin

I am 10 post op this coming monday

I was anxious for physio, however, my physician wants me to focus on just walking andn endurance until my next appointment in about one month.

He said with all my leg has been through (accident, surgery, months of no walking, mending, avn, non mobile again, then THR) that I need to focus on healing and walking.

So, physio in a month (maybe). But I can see what he means.

Oh, I do the therapy that I was told to do at home....and have added leg lifts from being on my back (which he okayed). He said to just continue those and add reps as I get stronger.

    Hi Gaylene

I can only advise that the pain is because you have been unable to use those muscels for so long it will hurt till you get used to it.  Maybe you should work up to the ammount of lifts etc you have been given to do. With the ankle weight just start with one lift 3 - 5 times a day. With the elastic try one again 3 - 5 times per day. with breaks of an hour between. As for supporting yourself on your side try pushing your bed or laying on the sofa with your back resing on the back of the sofa for support till you get more comforatble doing the excersize. Try also a hot water bottle wrapped in a small towel before you excersize to help loosen up the area. Heat helps a lot before excersize. That is why athleasts warm up before they run or dancers warm up befoire a show. Same with any physical activity.

    Hope this helps smile

That seems far too much weight to me and an awful lot of exercises. I'd have a word with your surgeon if I were you!

I'd go along with others saying probably too much, too soon.

I have similar issues and am building up slowly. The side leg raises are v difficult for me. My Physio showed me how to put a small cushion/towel underneath foot to give initial 'push': it helped. I'd start without weights, slowly increase repeats, add lowest weight and minimum repeats, then build up and continue so on.

    Good luck.

    Hi Gaylene ...

How is to have your babies back home???

I remember that you are in the fairly early stages of recovery, right ?

    3 or 4 weeks ?

sounds like a lot and quite streneous exercises right now ... we all heal at a different rate and you might have been very fit prior to THR, but it is still major surgery and muscles and tendons etc. need time to heal  -

Listen to your body - when it hurts, stop or don't do them at all.

There is no gain in pain here...

Did they give you exercises to do when you were in the hospital? do those ones a couple pf time a day ...

Be very gentle with your self and take care....

    warm hug

It's great to have the kids back Renee though they certainly change the home dynamic. 😀 I missed them so much. They go back to school next Wed so I will be able to rest more then though I have to say they are great at getting things for me. 😜

Thank you for your advice, I will certainly ask physio when I see her next week. Am finding heat pack helps a lot.

      How are you going Renee?

Hi gaylene, yes I had problems with these as well! I have reflexology and am having jacuzzis! As I suffer from tension! I am also a carer for my disabled husband. But we must all remember to listen to our bodies,as its a major op!! Regards Amanda

All things considered...sounds very complicated and not really the right sort of thing to be doing getting over major surgery, I just let it go and do the regular handout excersises, non of that was on my handout???

Sounds too wierd...Best left alone,,,, surprised Ian ++

I couldn't do leg raises either very well without weights. And yes my groin hurts doing that too.

Listen to your body. Maybe you can back off a little. It takes time to heal.

I agree with some of the others, Gaylene, sounds much too strenuous

I have been doing the hospital hand out exercises and walking and mobility in my leg is amazing

Go easy - you shouldn't be getting a lot of pain like this
