Growth

How fast can these suckers grow? In Nov my cataract really seemed to effect my vision and April my Optomitrist and Opthamologist said the reason for my messed up vision is because of my cataract. It feels worse but I'm not sure if it's because I'm becoming more hyper aware or if it's growing quickly.

I know my questions are dumb, but I'm young and out of luck on corrective surgery and I'm dealing with this new reality

Is it worse in light? Mine were posterior subcapular cataracts. My vision became bad very fast especially while reading in low light. While driving in sunlight it was like looking through a frosted window.

Its just getting more cloudy. Like one half of my eye looks like wax paper and you can see it if you look at my eye. This sucks.

Every person is different: the cataracts can grow slowly or fast. The main thing is that they need to be corrected if there is a resulting issue with your vision.

When you say that you are "out of luck on corrective surgery", are you saying that for some reason, you can't have cataract surgery. What exactly is your Opthamologist tellin you?

Both of them said im too young for the surgery and they won't consider it until I'm 55 or 60.

There are many people on this site who have had cataract surgery at much younger age than 55.

People have cataract surgeries at whatever age the cataracts begin to affect the vision significantly. There is no basic reason for someone not to have a cataract surgery, if necessary, until the age of 55 or 60. If your opthamologist is not comfortable with doing a surgery on you, he/she has to give you a good reason instead of just saying that you should wait. If you are not satisfied with that answer, it will be good to consult with another opthamologist.

I know and all of you guys are absolutely right. I'm going to have to put my foot down, however, when it starts to effect my job.

      Hi Amelia,

Every country has it's own criterion before surgery is approved, here in the UK they won't usually consider surgery until your uncorrected vision is worse than 20/40 on the Snellen chart, unless you can convince them otherwise, eg work requirements.

Saying that if you go private you can do what you want.

I'm 39 and just had cataract surgery yesterday. My cataract was mature. Couldnt see anything at all. Like looking through wax paper. I'm in the US. No one should ever let their cataract go as far as I let mine go. The surgery was painless.

If your other eye does not have a cataract in it, you should be able to gauge how bad the cataract has progressed.  If you close the good eye and look through the cataract eye and then close the cataract eye and open the good eye ... You should notice clouded vision and muted or dull colors out of the cataract eye compared to the eye that does not have a cataract.

I noticed a problem when I looked up at the moon and saw six or seven of them in orbit with little walkways between each. No, that's the truth. The optocian said I had to cataracts, one eye worse than the other. Over a period of about a year and a half the first eye got bad to the point i was blind in the late dusk, that's when I lost my job while waiting for the op ;-(

After I had the op the other eye started down the slope, it must have taken about four years in all to hit the point where i could see nothing in dim light through it.

So I would not say fas in my case, but i would say inexorable.

And yes, by heavens you do notice every little flicker.
