Guidelines for dog on bed after surgery

My dog has been sleeping on my bed next to me for her entire life. I assume this is not a safe after cataract surgery 😃 Does anyone with pet who is accustomed to this have any guidelines for such a situation? Many thanks.

You should be wearing an eye shield at night for the first week after surgery. I am not sure there is any additional risk of sleeping with a dog. I assume the dog is not going to be pawing at your eye in the night...

I was just thinking in terms of a potential for infection... 😃

I agree. I would be very careful about infection and err on the side of caution. I don't have a dog so can't advise you but I was very careful about infection and did not have any infection problems as a result. Caution and extra carefulness is important.

Regarding the eye shield, I asked for one and got one but hated wearing it as it was very clumsy with all of the tape etc. My HMO is now no longer giving them out unless by request. I was able to sleep on one side only for about two weeks and didn't have any problems with no shield. Also, as you know you should also be VERY careful about not rubbing your eyes unconsciously during the day which can easily happen.

I read a lot of mixed reports on people using eye shields or not using them. If you can I would wear one just to be doubly safe.

Yes, the eye shield is to basically keep you from rubbing the eye when you are sleeping. One can control that when awake, but not so much when sleeping.

The only eye infection concern my eye doctor warned about was if you got water in your eye in the shower or similar. For the first couple weeks after surgery, I wore swimming googles over my eyes in the shower. But no warnings about animals unless they scratched your eye!

My cat continued to sleep next to me at night after my right eye cataract surgery and I had no issues. But he never scratched at my eye!
