Gut noises.

Hello

recently I've been having gut rumbling and noises. I suffer with anxiety and have recently changed medication from mirtazapine to citalopram.

The gut noise problem has been going on for a while. It's like the hunger noises your stomach makes but it's in my small and large intestines. It happens most of the day whether I have eaten or not. It does create gas at times. I don't suffer with any pain anywhere. I don't have diahorea only the occasional loose stools. It's made me.loose my appetite recently and I don't eat as much as I usually do.

Is this just my anxiety causing this as I've had it for over 2 years?

I've not had this problem for the whole 2 years just the last month or so. Although I've had times in the past but not where it stops me getting to sleep.

It certainly make my anxiety worse.

Is it because I notice it all the time it keeps doing it?

Is there anything I can take to help it?

Many thanks

Chris

Hi chris, I have similar problems and also suffer from anxiety.. my doc says it's ibs as mine consists of stools alternating between soft and hard and sometimes diarreah ( only odd cramps but not like some people) I think anxiety makes it worse as anxiety has a huge impact on your body in soo many ways.. and I can certainly relate to the grumbling noises!

Also I think when you have anxiety everything is heightened and you notice everything.

have you seen your gp about this ? Maybe worth mentioning just to ease your mind..

I drink peppermint tea I find it helps the tum and guided meditation for the anxiety.

    :-) x

Thank you for your reply. I'm going to try some peppermint oil capsules. I don't have any pain in my gut at all. I've started my new meds only 5 days ago so guessing my anxiety is worse with the withdrawal of one and starting another. I also have no faith in my new meds until I either get a decent nights sleep or I feel alot better for a few continous days

      Hi chris

I'm on peppermint capsules too and I find they also help.

Give your meds time to work.. I too have recently switched ad and my anxiety was at an all time high but it will settle when they kick in, be kind to yourself and give the meds time to do do there job and anything you can try in the meantime like breathing exercises and meditation for anxiety ( look on utube ) I can't sleep at night now without my "down quiet meditation time" i find I'm asleep before it ends lol i swear by it !! Good luck :-)

It does sound like Anxiety, when we are stressed our tummy produces more acid and if there is no food the tummy lining will get attacked and it can damage the lining, you may not be causing any real damage although this rumbling can be treated with a glass of water, possibly milk or medications from your Doctor..

Some people purchase special mint or mixtures that put a lining on your stomach.

Have words with your Chemist and see what is suggested, if He feels he cannot help He will advise you to see your GP

Thanks bob. My noises come mainly from the bottom of my abdomen. Below my belly button either side. If I put my hand over the area I can feel it through my skin. It's obviously on my mind all the time and because I can't seem to switch it off physically I find it difficult to just ignore it

    Hey chris,

I was having all of the same symptoms as you. I have very bad anxiety and even worse health focused anxiety. I got to the point to where I was SO afraid I had some type of problem or disease that I went to the ER in the middle of a panic attack. Told them the noises and that I was having pain in my abdomen and they did a CT scan. Everything came back fine. Nothing is psychically wrong. Possible IBS, which anxiety can make worse. The problem with anxiety is that you become hyper-aware of normal bodily processes. People around you may be going through the same thing but they don't even notice because they don't have anxiety that focuses on it.

It was actually pretty funny because after the ER told me I was okay, it was like the stomach noises went from a 10 to a 1. I don't really notice them now. So weird how our minds work.

Good luck. Maybe seeing a doctor would give you piece of mind.

Thank you for your comment Brooke. I think you are correct in being hyper aware of my symptoms. The more the symptoms persist whatever they are the worse I get. I've had days where I have no symptoms and I'm able to play football and do all sorts of things.
