Had a total hip replacement 3 weeks ago

I have had a cement less total hip replacement on the 8th July and have still not heard about any more physio. On leaving hospital they told me to do the bed exercises in the pamphlet they gave me and I would be contacted in the near future. I still haven't heard anything. Is this right?

I had non cement total hip replacement on 15th July. Like you I was given leaflet with few exercises in and told local hospital would be in touch following week. I have been given app on 11th Aug so will have gone 4 weeks with no support. I feel totally abandoned and unsure what I should be doing. Yesterday I went down from two sticks to one but found I am limping more and bit more uncomfortable so today gone back to two sticks.
How are you finding sleeping. ? I think that this is one of hardest things as never been able to sleep flat on back.
Are you in UK. ? I have been reading that being left to manage alone is not unusual 😕

so sorry you feel abandoned - I think we all feel that way at some point - I did too and still do sometimes ---
for now, continue to do the bed exercises and the standing ones you did in the hospital ( knee lift - side and back ) until you have met with PT - use 2 sticks outside and 1 inside when you feel confident and no limping -Â
When is your follow up appointment?
there are many discussions on sleeping on back - or not sleeping ...
Remember that you just had major surgery, darling -
so be gentle with Tracey - she is doing good -
come back here anytime okay ? you are not alone anymore

Thanks for your kind words. Yes will walk indoors on one stick then two when I go out.
Seeing consultant on 12th September - and physio on 11th August.
My leg was going into spasm at night so gp prescribed anti spasmodic medication for night. It knocks me out so do sleep when taking it but very sleepy day after. Now taking every couple nights instead.
I have had surgery before but never with so many restrictions as per movement, independence, etc. But find a way round doing things indoors with reacher stick, etc.
Just come back indoors from walking tiny bit further but had scare as been raining out and stick slid a bit on wet blossom on pavement.
Take care

Thanks for your reply. I have phoned the hospital this afternoon to ask about physio and if I was doing right using the two crutches and just doing the bed exercises. They told me that I was doing exactly what they wanted me to do and will be hearing from the physio department soon. Fingers crossed this will eventually happen. As regards sleeping. I am not sleeping well at all with also having a bad back after back surgery a few years ago.I am sure once I can sleep on my side my sleeping should be better. I am in the Uk. Look after yourself too. Will keep you updated.

Hi Elaine,
I'm 7 and a half weeks and in the UK. I didn't have any appointments for physio either just the little sheet you get discharged with. I had my first appt last week after ringing up but can only have 2 sessions on the NHS. If I need more I will pay I guess. I don't see my consultant until September. I think the consensus is that walking and those exercises should sort you out. However I feel as though I need some physio because i can't walk without my stick yet. It's all very isolating ??

hi elaine,
warm welcome to the best forum for hippies by hippies in all ages and stages of this incredible journey - we come together from all over the world and share our personal stories and experiences ...
the physical therapy part is different and might depend on what the policy of your hospital, surgeon or insurance is ...
I live in Holland and a physical therapist had to be in place before I was discharged - not sure why ...
I still had to make the phone call for an appointment - PT visited me 2x at home and since I had no way of getting to him, I saw him after my follow-up visit with OS at 7 weeks post-op ..
I have taken out a supplement to standard insurance to include x PT sessions ..
I also got the leaflet with exercises to do , the bed exercises and standing ones I was taught in the hospital -
I would contact the hospital because I have a feeling that you won't be called by them -
how are you getting on otherwise?
big warm hug

Elaine...it amazes me that people are released from hospital without any guidance and home physical therapy scheduled right away! The day I was released from the hospital someone came in to talk to me about home physical therapy and that they would call me to set up appt. by that evening the physical therapist called me and scheduled to see me the next day! To me having a therapist to show you and coach you with these exercises is very important for recovery and that you don't hurt yourself. I wish you all the best and call ASAP! Hugs! ??????

Hi Elaine, I'm in UK too and exactly the same, having seen a Physio and just going with what my body tells me is right which is tricky sometimes as my attitude sometimes goes against what I should be doing eg resting..
I'm 8 weeks and went down to 1 stock too early, limping and sore so back to 2 sticks til I'm stronger.
Best wishes,
Sheila

Hi Elaine!! I live in California and had THR 1 week ago today. I'm doing really good! I cannot believe you have had no PT contact? I had my first therapy 2 days after coming home. Not only does it strengthen your hip but Natalie ((therapist)) reassured me as I had many questions. I hope you can get some help and you heal soon .

Hi Anna
i am also 4wks post thr this Friday and see the consultant on the 23rd Aug.i intend to ask him about physio if I haven't had any before I see him.It strikes me that it's very common in the Uk after reading what other people have said about their experiences after thr. Look after yourself.

Morning. I am three weeks post op tomorrow. Yesterday I pushed myself and walked outside further than before. Wasn't long but felt very stiff with groin pain which I haven't had before. Was on two sticks still.
Ended up taking it easy rest of day. Went to bed exhausted but just couldn't get comfy to sleep and awake majority of night again.
My wound still hasn't completely healed so district nurse coming back again next week.
I must say how grateful I am for finding this forum as really reassuring to speak with people in the same situation.
Take care

it is not unusual to overdo it around this time - I thought the further I walked the better ... arghhh ... not so - instead I was advised to walk 2-3 times a day and take short walks and to use my rollator (4 wheel walker) to prevent me from limping .... Â
did you have staples/clips and are they removed ? Â
slow down, darling ...

I had desolvable stitches with a knotted one each end of scar.
I have been more sensible today and walked slower and not as far . Feeling lot less uncomfortable than yesterday.
I only have two sticks to use so doing that outside and just the one indoors. Managing to get few bits done indoors using grabber stick. Only so much tv/reading etc I can take in a day.
Hopefully you having a good day xx
