Had an endoscopy-total-thyroidectomy with some nerve repair: how long before my voice comes back?

Surgery was Feb 20th...4 days ago. Starting to feel anxious a nervous. My legs feel heavy and tingle a little?? I am a 50 year old black female, weigh 118 lbs and in pretty good health. I've never been on thyroid meds. Was diagnosed with osteoperosis 1 year ago..taking 150 mg Boniva and 1200mg calcium along with 2000mg vit D. Had a 4cm nodule along with other large nodules in both lobes and 2 large growths in the stem. Thyroid was 3 times its normal size. Large nodule caused my breathing tube and feeding tube to shift to the right..caused damage to nerve along the vocal cord. What should I expect when taking the thyroid meds?

Sounds like an overdose of Vitamin D and Calcium both of which cause nervousness, nausea, vomiting, tingling hands, feet and around the mouth, rapid heartbeat, elevated blood pressure, mental confusion, agitation, increased protein in the kidneys, copious urination, renal complications, muscle cramps. Vitamin D can cause blackouts.. Avoid eating foods laced with iodine and iodised salt such as seafood, bread, milk (read all food labels)as they too can cause/result in hyperthyroid symptoms- very similar. Recent medical studies (New Scientist magazine- can't remember the month ) have shown that- a person exposed to sunlight( whilst completely naked) from dawn to dusk will manufacture 250 iu of vitamin D per day- no more. Discuss with your specialist about reducing your dosage . You can google- side effects of calcium and vitamin D to find out more.

Oh my!!!!! Thank you Kiara!!!!!! I have osteoporosis and was taking mega doses of both before surgery (1200mg cal / 2000mg vit D). After my surgery my surgeon told me to increase my amount of calcium. My calcium tabs also have vit D!! My surgeon said my parathyroids were a bit swollen but he left intact...said he was not sure this was a result of vit D deficiency or aggravation from the tumors that were in my thyroid..told me to up my dose. Tried to explain to him I was already taking both because of my osteoperosis.. This increase led to me ingesting 1800mg cal / 5200mg bit D!!!! 1 week after surgery I had my follow up with the surgeon. Pathology report came back clean. He mentioned again how important it is that I continue to take calcium and vit D supplements 3 times a day! Again I explained that I have been taking supplements for a year since diagnosed with osteoporosis.. He simply said "Reduce it to twice a day.." He never mentioned how many mgs or eve asked what dosage I was taking. Every simptom you mentioned I have sad I am only 2 weeks post surgery and I feel miserable!! I return to work Monday and already I am not sure how I will make it through the day. On top of everything else.. I am averaging 2 hours of sleep per day! Last night I pulled an all nighter... Crazy thing is I am not sleepy! Any advice for the insomnia?? Ambien did not work. Or maybe I didn't give it a chance to work. I took 12.5 mg of the extended release formula and never even yawned. I need help!!!!!!

Mega doses of Vit D and calcium can build up in the body and cause horrendous effects. It's better to start with smaller doses and build them up to a reasonable average dose not an overdose.Your parathyroid glands would be swollen due to surgery because the thyroid and parathyroids are physically connected. The internal swelling will go down in time. Your parathyroids are intact so why would you be taking excessive doses or any dose at all if your calcium level and vitamin D levels are mildly deficient or close to normal? Insist on getting a copy of your blood test results and if the readings are in the normal range then seriously question the doctor. Sleeplessness and weakness are also side effects of Vit D andcalcium overdose as well as post surgery recovery symptoms. . Reducing your dosage will reduce your misery but please seek a second opinion from a different doctor who is aware of the debilitating side effects of Vitamins and minerals. Take yourmedical report to the new doctor. You have every right to seek a second or even third opinion- it is your life.

Please extend your recovery period and put your feet up - it may take a few months to feel better because the surgery you've had was major surgery and your body metabolism needs time to readjust itself. You need to pamper yourself. If you are taking thyroxin- it too can cause the same or similar symptoms and the dosage will need to be adjusted because it can cause -hyperthyroid/overactive symptoms if taken in excess. Explain your situation to your employer- you need serious time off work.

Wear earplugs to bed, avoid tea and coffee two hours before bedtime, block out all intrusive light, calm yourself down without medication by listening to music/ watching a good show on the telly/, read a book/ have a good good cry..create a routine.and if you don't get enough sleep- please don't stress- it will happen in time...but give yourself time. Be kind to yourself. Don't forget if you reduce your calcium dosage - have one glass a day of lactose free milk instead or a small chunk of lactose free cheddar cheese. The side effects shouldn't be as noticeable. In Australia where I am, 600mg a day of calcium and 500 iu up to 1000 iu of Vit D(no more than that) is the average dose and even that causes side effects. You will get better but it will take time and patience and peace of mind. Day by day you will improve anz521. I promise you. Stay calm and remind yourself when you feel miserable that you WILL get better. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

When you are well- start a very gentle walking routine- even if it's around your house or in yourloungeroom- a few time a week for 15- 20 minutes. It will help your metabolism and your osteoporosis. Keep your spirits up.
