Had Tonsilitis for 18 months. What can I do?

so in June of last year i came back from a holiday with, what I'm told is Tonsillitis. I’ve been to my local GP as well as had a meeting with a surgeon regarding whether or not I should have a tonsillectomy. I’m now on the waiting list however it’s still going to be over a year before I’m treated and potentially could be longer.

The tonsils themselves are large, and they always are. They don’t ever reduce in size but I do experience more pain some days compared to others. There aren't any white spots that are visible on them either. I’ve been told that my condition is not glandular fever as they’ve took my blood and checked.

I’m writing this because I feel like I’m at the end of my tether with this problem and need some sort of solution as for the past week I’ve been having difficulty drinking water as it is extremely painful to the back of my throat. Any advice on what I could do would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Leo.
