Had TUIP on Wednesday. Can't get more than 100cc out

So I had TUIP this past Wednesday (November 9) and my doctor told me I could take my foley out after 24 hours, but I played it safe and waited 48 hours. Considering my bladder neck was cut, and my uro did a urodynamics and determined i'm producing adequate bladder pressure, i'm not sure why i'm having such difficulty getting anything out. The most i've been able to void on my own has been 175 cc and that was after taking a flomax before bed. I still cath'd out 450 cc. Isn't the idea of TUIP to be improved flow? I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice and now have to live with it. Here are my flow results since taking the cath out on Nov 11.

Nov 11. 435pm 50cc out/300cc cath

Nov 11. 645pm 50cc out/450cc cath

Nov 11. 1115pm 50cc out/400cc cath

Nov 12. 630am 175cc out/450cc cath (took a flomax before bed)

Nov 12. less than 50cc out/300cc cath

Nov 12. less than 50cc out/350cc cath

I'm getting the urge to go but it just seems like my bladder is making an initial push and then running out of gas.

Now i'm worried I spent all this money and risking retrograde for nothing, and that i'll wind up cath'ing for the rest of my life.

I'm 40yo with a 29g prostate.

It only has been a week.  Give your self some time.  Maybe a month. They do say 2 weeks for improvement but all men heal at a diffrent rate.  I saw the pictures.  I hope you don't get retro. Just was reading up on the Tuip procedure.  It said that 6 to 55 out of a 100 will get retro.  At 61 I don't want it and at 40  I would never think about it.  Before you had surgery do you try anything else to relax your bladder.  Maybe meds would have help.  Take care and good luck  Ken

Yes, I did try cialis and flomax. Flomax would have a good effect first thing in the morning but did nothing for me later in the day. Plus the headaches in the morning were unbearable.

Doctor wanted me to wait two weeks before sexual relations but I didn't last seven days. Happy to report no retrograde.

So I met with my uro one week post op today. He was expecting me to tell him i'm peeing like a racehorse, but alas that is not the case. He told me even with the minor swelling (still have blood in urine), I should be getting out more than 200cc even if it takes slightly longer.

I shared with him my theory that my bladder is giving a strong initial push and then fizzles out, and he is open to possibly treating that with a drug called bethanychol, but he wants to give it three weeks to see if I improve. He said the good news is my bladder is getting the signal between 300-400cc, which explains the very strong urge in the a.m. with 700cc+.

Just looking at my journal the 50cc output seems to be consistent each day at the 300-400cc signal. I haven't gone over 100cc output except first thing in the morning.

I meet again with him on December 9.

      Hi Tpanative,

I wanted to hear how your progress is at this point.  I just had TUIP yesterday, and plan to keep the in-dwelling catheter another day.  I also fear that I'll have a similar experience.  I was only able to void 50 - 150cc before the operation, and typically had residual of 200 - 300cc.  Based on your experience (and others I read about), I am anticipating that I too will have a few weeks where I have difficuly voiding naturally.  I hope your situation has improved.

Everyone is different. It all depends on how your bladder muscles react to being touched and not used for 2 days. I had no problems after mine in June. Little trouble holding urine for a couple weeks but not bad. Leak a little. Then your bladder learns what it needs to do again. Peeing normal after do long is awesome. Lol. Sleeping all night. It comes on so gradually you probably didn't notice it til it was real bad. I did have to have more taken out end of November. Mine was so big it squeezed back down. Was out of hospital less then 24 hours after surgery this time. No pain or bleeding after a couple days.

Waffalobill -- Thanks for feedback, and I'm glad to hear your process seems to have turned out well (and that going back in for a second time wasn't too bad for you).  It will indeed be refreshing to be able to pee normally after so long.

Did you have Retrograde after the TUIP surgerys?  If so, how much does that affect you?  I had a single incision TUIP / Bladder Neck Incision (only on one side at about 6 o'clock), but I also had to have some of the Median / Middle Lobe of prostate removed, so it's uncertain if I'll end up with Retrograde (certainly possible that I'll have it to some degree, if not completely).  Thanks!
