Haematoma after hip revision

Hi I am new to this forum but glad I found it. I had a revision hip acetabulum three weeks ago which all seemed to go well. I know it is early days but I am so worried about a very large haematoma I acquired. It became noticeable about two days after surgery. It just didn’t look like normal swelling. It honestly looked like a tennis ball stuck on the side of my hip. Two weeks post op I was so distressed I went back to my surgeon who dismissed it saying it would take months to go away.
Yesterday I really couldn’t take it any more not only does it look horrible but I feel sharp thigh pain underneath it which feels like someone poking my thigh with a sharp needle so I called my local private hospital and managed to see a consultant. He drained it and probably a good half pint if old blood came out. My leg returned to its normal self and the pain eased.
This morning why I woke up I was scared it might come back and guess what it has started appearing again. It’s not as big but I cannot understand why more blood has collected? My common sense would say it must still be bleeding inside. I

Did the doctor give you an explanation yesterday of what is causing it?

Hello. I'm 3 weeks post-op TRHR (anterior). I have hematoma and mine feels like a large peeled boiled egg next to the surgical site (a big lump). It's not painful and my surgeon said this is normal. He drained it a week ago and said there will still be swelling and to keep ice on it. I'm scheduled to see my surgeon tomorrow and he'll probably drain it again. I will ask him if this will eventually flatten out.

thanks for making me laugh, the thought of a peeled boiled egg. I can beat that mine is the size of a tennis ball , actually it’s smaller than before it was drained but mine does hurt as well so that’s not funny! I was quite concerned about getting it drained in case I got an infection from the needle , such a nuisance it came back. Did your surgeon explain what caused this to happen. I was told it will go gradually but could take months! I don’t want to wait months!

Hey Jane, my doctor said it's a collection of blood and clot in the wound which he said is pretty common. I was still concerned even after he drained A LOT of blood and there were no noticeable difference in the size of my hematoma after the drainage. I'm just glad it's not painful (just looks and feels weird!) I'm with you, I don't want to wait months before this "alien" finally go away. I'm praying you get relief from this additional pain and for a full recovery. Hang in there!

just wondering how your swelling is? I think I am going to need surgery to get rid of mine .Yesterday it really enlarged and it’s frightening the life out of me. It seems I have an ongoing surgical bleed from a vessel somewhere so draining it again won’t work as it will keep coming back. Good news is it isn’t infected though , got the pathology report back today.
Did you get yours drained again ?
I hope that you continue to do well.

Hey Jane, saw my surgeon last Friday and he drained my hematoma again. The lump noticeably decreased in size just a bit, but still feels like there's a "smaller" peeled boiled egg next to the surgical site. : ) The surgeon said it will flatten out over time. Sounds VERY scary what you're going through! Doesn't seem to be improving & surgery may be the best route for you to take to prevent any infection. I'm hoping all goes and ends well with your recovery Jane.
