Haemorrhoidectomy in 5 days, please Help!!

Hi all,
I am a mum of 3 and i am going for Haemorrhoidectomy next week. I have been suffering from piles for past 6 years after my second child was born and the problem has gone worse during and after my third pregnancy. Every other month, I get really painful piles which usually last for 2 -3 weeks, hence I have decided to go ahead and get rid of these nasty piles to get my life back. My third baby is 7 months old now and i have been living on lexatives since first month of pregnancy.
My consultant prescribed me RESOLOR 2mg swhich i m using with movicol Sachets since April.
Yesterday i went for pre op assessment hoping i would get some advice about the diet and aftercare etc but i was disappointed. After searching online i came across this site and got some really helpful but scary information. Now I feel like i have no time left to prepare myself. My consultant told me the pain will last for 10 days max and that within 4 weeks i would be back to normal...but reading some people's experiences, it doesn't seem to be realistic. My worry is that usually my piles are quite painful, some time so much that despite using lexatives, i struggle to open my bowels (my muscles being involuntarily squeezed due to pain and swelling) so how much worse should i expect now???
I would also be given 2 antibiotics, painkillers including paracetamol, iboprofin and cocodamol and lexatives (which i am already using for past few months) . Would this combination work? Has anyone tried these or anything better for pain relief.. I am prone to get constipated so should i be using all these... What should i eat now for next 5 days and after surgery... Is there anything that worked for anyone please let me know....i am completely lost at the moment and would appreciate every single piece of advice please

I would start upping water and fiber now, eliminate things that constipate like cheese and white rice/breads. I would also suggest miralax daily as this will keep stool soft and moving. Make sure that you have everything you’ll need at hand (medicines, ice packs, books/movies, sitz bath). Once you have the surgery be sure to have your spouse or someone else with you to help with the kids.
My husband took off ten days so that he could take care of me, 5 and 3 year old. I was in bed heavily medicated for the first two days. Bm’s will hurt the first week, but at seven days I was up for my follow up appt. I even went with hubby after on a few errands. I had a big turning point at ten days and went back to work. You will absolutely get through this and be glad you did!

I had my hemmrroidectomy done 4 weeks ago . Here is a summary of what it was like :
1. For first 10 days post surgery , you will feel the most pain that you ever had . So, being a mom of 3 they say it is as painful as giving birth . Of course I wouldn’t know how that feels since I ama man but my wife always reminds me how painful giving birth was .
2 . For the 20 days after that , pain subsides and becomes discomfort . Also , pleasant symptoms continues : passing gas , anal discomfort , bowl movement frequent urges , slight fecal leakage that improved as time goes by , inability to sit still for long periods ,etc
3 . It has been a month for me now and I feel recovery is 80% . The other 20%will probably take 2 more months for a complete 100% recovery .
4. You will hear different experiences from different people since people tolerance level for pain differs , they heal differently and of course the type of surgery ( mine was traditional in which 2 were removed by scalpel)
For first 10 days nothing helped to alleviate pain ! Specially during bowl movement .
After 10 days , I saw relief when using pain killers and sits bath
Please remember to :
Drink at least one gallon of water daily
Eat a lot of fiber foods
Best of luck to you !

Two main points
1. Recovery is measured in weeks not days. The first week sucks, no sugar coating it. Functionality begins in week 2. Weeks 3 and 4 provide improvement. From week 5 onward recovery is in sight and the worst is over. Everyone is different but this seems about average. Dont be fooled by those who imply it’s not big deal. I don’t doubt that some recover faster but they are the exception. I hope you are one of those.
2. Keys to recovery relate to managing BMs (laxatives, careful diet, wound care), pain management (careful with opioids, plan on a lot of hot baths - mandatory!), lack of mobility and discomfort. All these issues resolve themselves eventually but it’s a rough go, especially the first 10-14 days. Assume you will be one week off work at absolute minimum unless you are a home office worker.
if I had to do it again, and I pray never to need to, I would start laxatives and stool softeners 3 days in advance of surgery, and have creams (Aquaphor and any prescription creams for pain) purchased, and gauze pads (100 count minimum) ready.
you will get through it, everyone does. Read and prepare, it will help

I was dreading the operation but mine was not bad.
I was slightly sick after the operation so had to stay in over night.
They make sure that you can pee before they discharge you.
For pain I was given paracetamol and dihydrocodeine and BM I was given lactulose and fybogel. I hardly had any pain do only took the paracetamol. The first BM was painful as you do not know what to expect. Just let it come and do not force it. After every BM I had a shower then changed it to sitting in a hot bath. This helped. For breakfast I ate bran flakes and added either raspberries or blackberries. Eat high fibre diet and drink plenty of water. I had my operation in the UK. Where is your operation being done?

I had external hemmorohids and a fissure. They were extremely painful before surgery. Yes I was terrified of surgery and it was a rough week after surgery but the gave me stool softeners which really helped. I made it and it was so worth the thought part. It's been 4 mths and I'm fine now. I still drink miralax once a day which keeps me regular and my stools are soft and easy. After surgery I ate yogart and fish with mash potatoes. Soft foods. Surgery for me was a life saver and so worth it. Good luck..

Just had mine 6/13. 3 large were removed, I have 4 children. THANK GOD they're older because they were Great support for me. Please line up your support system for daily activities. No lie, this pain was worse than childbirth. Be careful with painkillers because many of them cause constipation. You'll need extra fiber and peri coach stool softeners. Trust me, there's a difference between. Peri colace and regular colace. I took double the maximum recommended for stool softeners and fiber because you DO NOT want to get constipated. Sorry you have to go through this as I'm pretty sure it'll be worth not having to deal with what you're currently dealing with. You'll need plenty of fruit and veggies and soft foods afterwards. No pork or beef.

Sorry. Forgot to mention the meds I was on. Torradol every 3 hrs, the oxycodone +Tylenol every other 3 hrs. I also purchased a Biobidet from Amazon for $8. This was a LIFESAVER by being able to put hot water directly on the surgical site after BMs. Regular peri bottle didn't really help. Returned to work 3 weeks ago and feel like I rushed it a bit. Take it as easy as possible and allow others to care for you as you do for them, mama. Rest easy and the best of luck.

Hi there,
First of all a huge thanks to all of you lovely people for your kind advice and support. I am really grateful as i wasn't sure what to expect otherwise.
I had 2 large piles and skin tags with an old fissure removed on Friday last week, making it my 9th day post op today. Thanks to this board, i was quite prepared for the worst. Since i was given local anaesthesia as well as general, my first 2 BMs werent much painful. I took antibiotics for 3 days, and still taking painkillers with stool softners. On 6th day however, i had the worst BM of my life with unexplainable excruciating pain, i nearly passed out, that night i couldn't sleep a wink and the pain hasnt subsided much since. I fear i might have done some damage as it felt my inside were out. To make things worse, my right leg gets pins and needles and shooting pains specially when sitting on toilet, which my GP suggests could either relate to my handling during the op or sciatica but it has made my mobility worse.
I don't know if i m missing something that i should do, right now I m taking sitz bath/ hot bath after BM, taking lexative and stool softner that i was using before the op but still cant manage my toilet routine as i end up going 4-5 times a day which is so exhausting..not to mention too painful, yet always feeling like i need to go, like there something sitting in the rectum.
Should i cut down or change my lexatives? My worst fear is to ever get constipated. I shall greatly appreciate any tips or advice please.

Just wanted to let you know that what you are going through is normal . I went through same exact thing such as:
Feeling urge to go for a BM 4-5 times
I also felt numbness in my right thigh . It takes time but it went away after 5 weeks
Hopefully one more week and you will be pain free just discomfort . I took 4.5 weeks off before I was ready to go back to work .
Full recovery takes at least two months .
Best of luck to u

Hi pita,
Exactly 3 weeks today and recovery is still not in sight. Although the excruciating pain has subsided but discomfort/ pain specially after BM is still an issue. I m doing my day to day work at home, cooking etc but i still can't sit properly. So i m either walking around or lying in bed/ couch. Also still taking painkillers and lexatives regularly hence toilet visits are atleast 4-5 times a day.
This board has been really helpful for me and i have followed everyone's advice to the T.
Lots of hot bath / shower specially after BM
Don't strain or force BM, try to relax as much as possible. I am using squatty stool and it is really helping. I got i from amazon.
Fiber in your diet, lexatives and stool softner.
Drink atleast 3 litres of water or more.
And most importantly, try to stay positive... It really really helps.
I hope you have speedy and complete recovery soon. Best of luck!!
