hair falling out due to alopecia, need a friendly chat and some advice please :)

hi, im 24 years old and i've been suffering with alopecia for about 4 months. it first started with a bald patch the size of a 50 pence piece. i went to the doc who diagnosed it as a fungal infection, she assured me it would grow back. it didnt, it just got bigger. i saw a different doc who diagnosed me with alopecia areata, he ran some blood tests on me, everything was clear apart from i was lacking in vitamin D and vitamin B12. I am now on tablets for this. my doc told told me my hair loss could be due to my B12 deficiency and maybe the tablets i had to take would stop it falling out. its been six weeks now and my hair is coming out even more! i only have to run my hand through my hair and i have about 10 - 15 strands on my hand. my bald patch is at the back of my head and its about 3 inches wide and 2 inches high but is not noticeable if my hair is down or if i tie it to the side in a bun. i am grateful that its not as noticeable as some peoples but its causing me a huge amount of distress. i have always had very thick, long hair since i was young but now its very thin and flimsy! my doctor refused to give me anything for it, just told me to keep an eye on it but its got considerably bigger than when he first saw it. im going back to the doctors this week, should i demand to see a specialist or should i ask for cream or any other medication for it? im at my wits end at the moment, this has really knocked my confidence and i didnt have a lot to begin with! i think about it 80% of the time that im awake and when im lying in bed at night, my mind is racing which makes it difficult to sleep. my parents have been very supportive, but i think i would like to speak with a fellow sufferer who knows what im going through, how i feel, and could maybe give me some advice on how to cope with this condition. thank you x

    Hi All,

I've read through all the posts, I've had hair loss for about twenty years, but it's only recently has it become debiltatingly bad! This after my usual colouring - nearly had a panic attack!!

Now at a loss what to do - too frightened to wash it !! Even felt 'crushed' with the doctor's diagnosis -

'male pattern baldness' - what's the point any more!

Hi Alexandra31, I don't know whether your problem has resolved itself yet, but just thought I would make you aware of a new treatment for Alopecia Areata. It was featured on the TV programme 'Embarrassing Bodies',

don't know whether you watch this programme, but it was the one where the team of doctors were in Australia. It showed a very effective treatment regime where the patient has a course of steroid treatment injected in to the area on the scalp with hair loss, and it apparently works very well. I am sorry I haven't got a link for this treatment, but you could more than likely google it and find appropriate information.

If you still need help and you are still looking at the forum may be this might help. Your GP may be able to give you advice or point you in the right direction for help with the above too. I don't know whether this treatment is just operational in Australia or whether it is done here too.

    Hi Alexandra,

I'm currently also suffering from alopecia areata, I've got one spot in front of my head like 9 months. I woke up in a morning with a spot on my head, after a stress. At the beginning was very slow, but it started to extend very quicly. I've done a lot of analyses and I advise you also to follow them. Those are:

    Thyroid- TSH, T4, T3, T2 hormones

Pancreas analyses- amylase and lipase. The pancreatis can cause hair falling and alopecia.

Differential blood count, HB, HT, Indices, ESR

    Intestinal microflora

    Serum Calcium

    Serum Iron

    Zinc

    Doppler test

    Encephalogram test

    Spine radiography

The last 3 test will show if there is any blood perifical circulation problem.

In my case, revealed problems with the pancreas(high amylase and lipase), low hemoglobin and bad blood periferical circulation.

I made an intensive threatment with homeopatic injections advise by my dermatolog, some pills for liver detoxification and pancreas normalization, pills to improve the blood circulation+ calming pills. Additional to this I made a few therapies: Corticosteroid therapies (which include intralesional injections); darsonvalization and  Cryotherapy With Liquid Nitrogen. On a daily use, morning and evening I used Minoxidil solution of 2%. All this threatment helped me, and in 1,2 weeks since starting it, my hair started to grow. Also it stopped falling so heavy.

The most precious advise (the doctor migh indicate it), keep a good diet for a few moths.

Now my spot is all cover with hair, some of it is big and colored, other white and small by the moment.

I hope my advise helps you.

My story is I'm 21 female. And have been losing my hair for a week. I've been diagnosed with alopecia areata and had a thumb sized patch last week. Now I have lost a significant amount , I am not one to preach as I am probably the least experianced person on here when it comes to this subject matter but I find the more I speak with people the more it is helping me deal with it. Maybe ask doc for some steroid cream as mine is convinced it's the best option but certainly doesn't infinately promise hair regrowth but maybe.

I've ordered a wig ") and wear headscarfs all the time. You can find some beautiful designs on YouTube so that of it is more noticeable like it is for me , you can hold your head u p a little. I find it hard especially right now but if you need someone to speak to please message me on here ") I dont mind ranting with you about how annoying it is ") and if I get anymore tips I will let you know.

    Hope you are well xxx

I too have two bald patches at the back of my head also first noticed by my hairdresser. It is very upsetting but I've had for 2 years now and have tried so many things.Sometimes it appears to be growing back but then falls out again.

It has been diagnosed by a dermatologist as alopecia areata. She explained their is no cure as such and they think it is caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles.

It did start when I had a lot of stress in my life but I've reduced the stress but still have the problem. So far Ive tried the prescribed cream a type of immune suppressant cream.Seemed to make it worse? Now have a steroid cream to try from the dermatologist.Have also tried a multivitamin for hair.Garlic and rosemary hair oil.Follicle shampoo and conditioner.

Thinking of trying Minoxidil lotion which is used for female pattern baldness but have been told that this just produces the fine type of hair you get on your arms?

I have also bought a wig just incase it all falls out but haven't worn it as it doesn't suit me and feels hot and itchy !

Anyone found anything that works ?I think maybe it is better when I don't look at it ! Perhaps not worrying about it is the first step? But so hard!

Hi ale alexandra, I am experiencing the same thing, I noticed your post was written over a year ago, I was wondering how you got on / what you tried. I am a 23 year old female and having a very tough time with it only being diagnosed 3 weeks ago with two patches one large one slightly smaller.

    Thank you!

ust signed up to this never been a forum type of person but i must insist onsaying something, as an ex derm nurse, and the husband of a wife who had this problem, for 20 years  we think we have cracked it,we have been to derm doc, who as usual will give steroid, oh and would you like a wig, she has tried meat free, non alcohol, and all sort of homeopathic nonsence

but i can tell what has worked , keep off bread, pizza , pasta , its gluten she also gets very bad stomach ache from leading up to the patches appearing

the problem only comes back if she goes particularly back on pasta,

3 years on her hair has maintained and all areata has gone, all grown back, but as soon as she tries pasta a small hairless formation starts about 8  days later, along with stomach problems.

i have advised a patient in hospital 18 months agowho was only 20, she also had the samesymtoms andnow she has followed the same as my wife, guess what, yep all hari back no stomach problems0 Report this Reply[darren62159] ★1

darren62159 peter49784 • 25 minutes agoo and by the way she doesnt have coeliac disease, she has been tested but it is a very sensative test so my advice would be to ignore it and have a strict gluten ffree diet for at least 3 months,

also look at the evidence of the link between glten free and hair loss, many times it mentions the stomach flora being unbalanced due to gluten
