I have a large bald patch of hair loss on front of head, do you think this could be caused of my dad dying, but it was 3 years ago and I'm told it could be shock

Have you been to your gp or referred to a dermatologist? Alopecia is believed to be when your immune system thinks your hair is foreign and attacks it. But they do say that stress can cause flair ups in the condition. So the stress of your loss could play a part.

Id go back and ask for a proper diagnosis. Because yes it CAN grow back. The first time I had it, it did but it took a year. The second time I had it, its lasted 11 years.

I don't know but I think my 2 bald patches started when my mother broke her right arm and my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I was also trying to come off HRT so I think stress can trigger hair loss but I'm still not sure and there isn't a lot known about alopecia.

I have seen a doctor and no help really. Just diagnosed with alopecia areata and told it's an auto immune disease where your body attacks hair follicles but no cause given .and no cure just wait and see!

I am trying to research it and just get as fit and healthy and hoping it grows back .I am fortunate that my other hair covers the bald patches which are at the back of my head.

Tried a few products but so far no good and doctor thinks these products not proven and therefore a waste of money .

There are treatments available. You need to ask your GP to refer you to a dermatologist at your local hospital. I had 4 different treatments over 4 or 5 years. Some are more effective than others. Im not sure why your doctor hasnt informed you of this. I had a skin thinning gel I used to apply to the hairless area, I had air injections and then needle injections into the affected area and I finally tried PUVA. It is not linked to being a fitness addict or strictly into your health. If your immune system believes its foreign. Its as simple as that. Stress most certainly triggers and worsens hair loss but it isnt the sole reason for actually having alopecia.

I did some research recently and ive found that they are testing a bone marrow tablet that fully restored 3 test studies hair. They are running some more tests still at current. Im going to follow this up with my GP.

Hi Thanks for information and would be interested if you get the bone marrow tablet and it works.

My doctor did refer me to a dermatologist at my local hospital and tried a cream she gave me but didn't make any difference .The information she gave me on alopecia areata and said that because some of the treatments had adverse side effects perhaps a wait and see approach was better as it may come back on its own?Im still waiting though it's been 18 months and some re growth possibly or maybe just some patches that didn't fall out .. Not sure as at the back of my head.

still seems a very strange disease for the body to attack itself !Nobody in my family has it in the past Did wonder whether worth trying Minoxidil .I have an open appointment with the specialist and may go back but really wasn't offering much but could get help with buying a wig if it gets worse !

      Hi Tina

the information I was given said that it may grow back white to begin with and the colour comes back later. There could be further hair loss in the future. There is a good chance the hair will grow back again though if the hair loss is patchy. Its a strange disease and the experts don't seem to know the cause and treatments can have side effects and sometimes comes back on its own without any treatment .Its very annoying but I have friends who have had cancer so as alopecia areata isn't that serious I try not to worry about it but it is upsetting for a woman. If I was a man I'd shave it all off and save a fortune on shampoo and hairdressers but a bald woman isn't a good look !
