I've been on Omeprazole since May. My hair is definitely thinner than it used to be - my husband commented he could see my scalp through my hair. I've decided to stop taking the drug and will see my GP regarding alternatives. I do take Gaviscon Advance at night and wonder if this alone will stop my symptoms - I have a small hiatus hernia and have had silent acid reflux which I was diagnosed when having checks done for a thyroid nodule which has been removed. Apparently my soft palate was red. I cannot believe this is a side effect that doctors don't warn you about. Its only from reading this forum that I've looked at the leaflet that is contained with the drugs - wish I'd read it earlier, but I would probably have taken the drug after reading the leaflet as hair loss is only marked as a rare side effect. I'm praying for my hair to thicken up.

I've been experiencing a lot of hair shedding the past 2 months and I'm only 49. Used to have lots of hair. Everyone said it is from stress, going through divorce over the summer, but it started the same time I started taking omeprazole for my stomach. So glad (and unfortunate) I found people going through the same thing. I am definitely not taking this anymore!! I'll live on antacids for the rest of my life.

Hi I have just signed up to reply to this question, It is the tablets causing the hair loss. It happened to me, had lovely thick hair it fell out got very very thin, stop them tell your GP they can give you other tablets, had to get my hair cut very short, but hang in there. I now have long thick hair again. Good luck I know how you feel

Hi I stopped taking this tab in oct and my hair is still thinning. I only take gaviscon now . How long did it take for your to grow back and stop falling out pls...x

Lansoprazole can cause hair loss also, it will take time for your hair to grow back as basically your waiting for it to come back through from the root. Had to get mine cut above my shoulders it was down my back took a year to get back to that length. Good luck as I know how devastating it is

Hi ..doc put me on Lansoprazole after the Omeprazole....does your hair still fall out....I did get mine cut after along time of not wanting to go to hairdressers...

I'm not sure how long it will take for hair to grow back. Mine still looks very thin. My hairdresser says the texture of my hair is improving, so I am hoping for some success. I only take Gaviscon now and will never be persuaded to take Omeprazole again.

I'm so glad that I reported hair loss through use of Omeprazole. So many people have since responded with the same problem. What makes me cross is it's only mentioned in the drug guidance leaflet at the very end of 'Possible Side Effects' under Rare Side-effects, which it clearly isn't. It should be way up top of the list!

Doctors have a duty to report worrying side effects to the drug company, but sadly too many either don't know the problem of hair loss or are too busy to bother reporting it to the manufacturer! Suggest all of us make a point of reporting this medicine to our doctors.

Hi guys. I joined up just to resond to this.

I am 28, and before my dr switched me, I was taking Omeprazole and now, from December I am on Lansoprazole.

In the past 12 months, I have had one bald patch appear on the left side of my head, a larger one to the rear of my head and two within my beard.

Could it have been the tablets?

I have been all over the web I am so glad I found this I thought it was a new drug I had been given and stopped taking it even though the pain problems have been terrible, but it has made no diiference in the hair loss department then I found this and this could be my problem as I have been given omeprazole to take with the etoricoxib which I have been taking since the begining of November 13 and my hairdresser first noticed the problem at the end of November, it has got a lot worse since I will speak to the doctor but stop taking this now as I cant see the doctor until 17th March

I have been taking omeprazole over three years now for acid refulx and at the start of the year i noticed my hair was breaking excessivley, i could pull my hair out from the roots easily, at first i though it was because i coloured my hair and i got so upset that i decided to cut of my hair and start fresh, hoping it would grow back healthier. However after cutting my hair off it is now growing back really slowly and it still keeps falling out. Im so glad i found this and other forums that have brought to my notification the really bad side effects of the drug that the doctors do not warn you about with being on it for so long. I loose a good amount of hair a day and it is really upsetting, i have now decided to stop taking the tablets and change my diet to a healthier one. I have been on omeprazole for so long for acid refulx i dont know how i am going to deal without it but i am determined to live a natural and healthier way of living.

Signed up for this post as well. I am a 19 year old male. At the end of october 2014 I was prescribed with this drug as well. I started taking it in the start of november. In december it was like my hair got thinner over night. I didnt even consider Omerprazole as a cause untill the start of January, when i did some reasearch. I stopped taking the drug even before i connected it to the hair loss. But could this Omerprazole be the cause? I am more affraid that it is genetic hair loss, but with my dad's very thick hair, and same with both my grandfathers and my uncle, it sounds unlikely. Have annyone experinced that the hair comes back? How long after you stopped taking the medicine?

I also lost half of my hair before I realised the problem must be one of my medications.  When I checked with my Specialist  he worked out what the problem was and changed my medication.  I am hoping it grows baack. Did you get your hair back

Hello, I'm a 17 year old woman and I've recently started taking these tablets, I've been taking them for the past 3 and a bit weeks and yesterday I lost so much of my hair, it's coming out in strands but I can't even explain how thin my hair is now. I can't even explain how upset, insecure and nervous I am about this, I've been reading on the internet you can lose up to 90% of your hair or even go bald, I'm just wondering if this happened to you? And if the doctor prescribed anything for you?

So, what were you taking when you lost  your hair, and what medication did the specialist give you?

I was on this drug for a month to treat an infection and have lost a significant amount of hair. Now that I am off, I was wondering if you had any luck with hair growing back?
