If you are taking this medicine continously then you should have contact your doctor again. Just because you were taking this Omerprozole you have started losing your hairs. In hair loss problems doctor prefers minoxidili and finestride tablets medicine.

Hi, I took omeprazole for about 12 months for gastritis. At the same time I was taking an iron supplement for anaemia due to heavy periods and fibroids. The fatigue was dreadful. And my hair was going thinner and thinner. My iron levels never went up despite upping the iron. I then found out from this site,  after googling,,  that omeprazole inhibits the absorption of iron! (Why my doctor didn't know this I'll never know)  I've always assumed my hair problems were from the anaemia. I stopped the omeprazole, I use rennies when needed, and the iron level is improving.

My hair is improving too. I use a biotin supplement and have used silica in the past. They make my hair grow faster, not sure about stronger..

Anaemia does affect your hair so I would have your iron levels checked if possible.

      Best wishes

      Hi Maisie05,

What are rennies?   You said you are taking them instead of omeprazole.   Thanks

      Hi Dottie

Rennies are an over the counter indigestion remedy in the UK. Like tums. I wasn't suffering too badly when I was prescribed the omeprazole and managed to wean myself off them using the rennies when I feel need to.

      Hope this helps a little.

What alternative medicine did your doctor prescribe?  Did it work as well?

I also have been using Omeprozole for acid reflux, my hair is very fine and seems

to fall out when I wash it etc I have read on my iPad that being short of magnesium

can cause hair loss, I am going to try a supplement.

I'm on PPIs daily, my hair started to falling out 2 weeks on them but then the body got used to the medication and am not experiencing any hair loss. Ofcourse if you've got a good genetic hair background and taking PPIs there is literally no way that a PPI could cause hair loss...

You are one of the lucky ones.  There are many people who lose hair on PPIs.  Thanks

many but not too many... if 100% are on PPIs les then 20 percent would experience hair loss which is again, low...

Yes, I have stopped taking everything except Omeprazole.  I also started taking biotin that is supposed to be good for hair.  My hair continues to fall out.  I cut back on the omeprazole, but i couldn't stay off it for long due to heartburn all the time.  My doctor is running some test now for other things that can cause hair loss besides omeprazole.  If nothing is found, it must be the omeprazole.  For those who don't recognize the name, it is generic for Prilosec.

If the magnesium helps, let me know.  Oh, I have a lot of short hairs coming back, but it keeps falling out, short and long hairs.

This kind of problem is not common. I think you have losing hairs from years that is why you got this problem.
