I signed up to today so I could tell you my experience with Omeprazole. I am so glad I discovered this forum, to hopefully stop the damage this drug has caused my hair and my stress level! I am female and have always had thick hair. Well not anymore! I was prescribed Omeprazole for acid reflux. I noticed after a month of taking it my hair is falling out by the handful! People were telling me it was stress, or normal hair loss due to age, but this was not normal! I would shampoo my hair and just squeezing the the cream rinse out, I would pull out clumps, combing too. If it keeps up like this I will be completely bald in a month! That is how bad it is! Someone at my work said it was a sign of hypothyroidism, so I just had that tested yesterday as well as my ferritin levels (don't have results yet). I found a hypothyroidism site that said that lack of ferritn (iron) and low stomach acid is a culprit of hair loss. That's when the bells went off! Omeprazole -low stomach acid and an Iron blocker!! That's when I googled the Omeprazole and found this site.  I stopped taking it about two days ago, but have been taking Ranitidine. Well done with that as well and am now going to take Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother daily. I am so angry that my doctor did not tell me of this side affect. I am taking iron supplements as well as silica and biotin and hoping that the hair loss will soon become minimal as days go by.

Kim your story is exactly the same as mine. Omeprazole prescribed for gastritis. Hair loss, palpitations, breathlessness = anaemia. Low Ferritin discovered despite very good diet. Found out omeprazole inhibits the absorption of iron. (found out from this site). When I told my doctor what I'd found out she just smiled. Used over the counter antacids when needed and now very rarely. 12 months later, I get compliments on my hair and my hairdresser is impressed. It took nearly 18 months of prescription iron to get my ferritin levels back up  I took/take silica complex and occasionally biotin and keep iron levels up with feroglobin capsules a couple of times a week.

How do you take the Apple Cider Vinegar? Do you mix it with something? I tried a little in warm water with manuka honey but it wasn't pleasant. Is a teaspoonful a day enough?

      Hi Maisie!

I hope that it does come back. I always received compliments on how beautiful my hair is, so you can imagine how frustrating this is.

I prepare it the same way as you, but haven't tried the honey. I'll have to try that. I was told that the reason we get acid reflux is the lack of stomach acid. I know that sounds funny, but it does make sense. Our stomach over produces the acid to compensate for the loss, which in return causes the acid reflux.

I was told to take it daily on an empty stomach prior to your first meal. If you get acid reflux later in the day, take it again. It should help. I have been taking it twice a day. Before I eat in the am and before I got to bed. So far I have not had any issues.

I have been reading everyone’s concern about hair loss. I’m starting to think this is what’s happening to me. I’ve been taking Omeprazole for a while now and I plan on stopping it. I don’t take any thing else but vitamins, so I hope this is the answer as I’m loosing more than is normal. I’m going to do some more research on it.

Did your hair grow back after stopping Omeprazole? I think it is the cause of my hair loss too! Thanks in advance.

I'm experiencing hair loss as well since being on omperazole. I was only taking a 10mg capsule Rx dose. I also started experiencing more joint pains as well. Told my gastroenterologist but his comments were never heard of such side effects of joint pains. Doctors prescribes these medications but they don't know the side effects of them, even some pharamist don't know or either the drug companies tell them not to. My doctor changed me to Lansoprazole but now wondering if this will still cause same symptoms since its in the same drug class. After reading this I'm going to ask my PC to run blood test on iron. also just so you folks know omperazole depletes your body of nitric oxide which narrows your arteries, start taking some beets.

I have been researching this & i suspect lansoprazole could cause issues with hair thinning also. Absorption of iron needs an acidic pH. All the drugs in this class (H2-blockers) reduce stomach acid. I switched to ranitidine about 2 months ago. It reduces acid too-but to a lesser extent and shorter period of time than the H2-blockers. (i wasn't able to go without any med due to return of stomach issues.) I haven't experienced any hair regrowth yet, but it isn't falling out as much as before. Good luck to you.

For those who stopped omeprazole, did your hair ultimately grow back? If so, how long did it take? Any advice on particular supplements/vitamins that seemed to help? I stopped drug 4 weeks ago and hair is still shedding...

I have been prescribed these so am concerned. This side effect happens alot with many drugs but is often not talked about. Although i think health is more important than anything it is still upsetting and sad for the individual affected. Best to speak to GP and seek alternative.

I took Prevacid from the day it was available. Probably 25yrs...with no problems everyday.

Apparently it stopped all or too much gastric whatever.

    I changed to Zantac (Ranetadine.

    I believe it was combination.

that and low Ferris count that set the stage for a Bladder drug that I was put on for no other reason that it was new to start the hair loss.

Got rid of the Mybetric...Prevacid every other day and upped Iron with Vit C.

    Back to normal.

    My ACID FLUX came back.

went back on Lans (Prevacid ).

    guess what!......Hair coming out again.

Don't get me started on BP meds.

I just left the drug store.

the pharmacist informed me that Zantac...Pepcid AC.. ...etc.. in that class are not available re. the investigation about the chemicals found in them...prescription anyhow.

So all that is left is the Prevacid class. I am in Canada ...maybe different in the U.S. ??

    Having a storm here...otherwise I

would go check for it at a big drug store.

    anybody here anything about this?

How did you solve your hair loss problem? I took omeprazole 20 mg for 10 years with no visable side effects. After an endoscopy I was diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus and changed to 40 mg per day. In the 16 months since that change I have lost about half of my hair. I want to change to a different ppi but I want to do my research first. Thanks
