Hair Loss

Hi everyone
My hair started falling out some time ago. Dr did tests and said iron was low, hair felt like it was growing back again. Since then I’ve been taken off the iron tabs as my bloods now say iron has gone up and is normal.
My hair is majorly falling out now. I used to have really thick long hair. Now it’s very thin and limp, I’m terrified I’m going bald!!! What, if anything, can I take to make my hair grow back? I’m worried about taking iron as mine is normal now and I know you can overdose on iron.
Thanks x

Hi Claire - try a Biotin and Zinc supplement, and have a look at Plantur 39 - it's a caffeine shampoo for hair over 40 (not sure how they decide the age but the stuff works!!). Also, make sure you take a decent calcium and vit D supplement. This regime has pretty much reversed my partner's hair loss. She now actually needs a haircut, after spending months feeling like she was literally going bald.

Thanks Lou I have seen that shampoo advertised on TV but thought it was a gimmick. I'll check out some of those supplements too x

On my last round of blood tests I asked the Dr to check my Vit D and they did, he said it's normal, so I know Iron and D are OK.

Hi yes I've got this. I take multi vitamin with iron and magnesium, selenium, omega 3, etc everything that is recommended to stop hairloss basically. I'm also on hrt patches. I had my thyroid checked and I take thyroxine. The main culprit in my thinning hair is lack of estrogen. Since I've been taking it, my hair shedding is greatly reduced.i also gentlymassage my scalp before I go to bed to increase blood flow.

I also put a level tsp of dry unflavoured gelatin in a coffee or tea everyday and drink. I noticed a big difference in just 2 weeks doing this. My hair doesnt clog the drain anymore...and it looks and feels softer and fuller.

I feel your pain. I just posted on this a week or so ago. How long has yours been thinning? I went to the salon and they told me the same that I read online. That it takes 3 months after the triggering event for our hair to stop shedding. I had problems last year when I skipped an entire cycle. Then the hair shedding g resolved after 3 or so months. And 2 months ago I had an annovulatory cycle and very low progestrone and it triggered another hair shedding episode. I too am in the same boat. Scared to even run my fingers thru my hair at times 👎

I've always had really fine hair but it was ok and I have always looked after it. About 12 years ago, at 43, I first noticed it thinning a bit but it seemed to thicken again and then I noticed it became almost an annual thing - it would thin in summer/late summer and then start to thicken again.
2 years ago it really thinned a lot (i'm now post-menopausal) and I visited my GP. She didn't seem particularly concerned and told me to take a zinc supplement, and also eat Brazil nuts...just 3 or 4 a day for the selenium content.
I started doing that but didn't see much change, although I still continue wit the Brazil nuts. I then read that Evening Primrose oil, of which I already take 2 x 1000mg capsules dally for anxiety, contains a substance which helps hair grow again if used topically. It contains both GLA and antioxidents.
I started rubbing the oil from 2 1000mg capsules into my hair, concentrating on the roots, and doing this 2 or 3 times a week. I rubbed it in and then left for a couple of hours, and then shampooed out, shampooing twice and then conditioning and drying as normal.
Within 3 months I saw a definite difference so I have carried on doing it at least once a week. I just carefully snip the top off an oil capsule, then drip it onto my hair at the scalp and rub in gently at the roots.
Good luck with whatever you try!
