Hair Loss PCO

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi everyone, my sister is currently getting tested for PCO. We are pretty sure she has it unfortunately, as all the symptoms are looking that way. One thing she is suffering quite badly with is hair loss, its breaking my heart watching my little sister go through this. Does anyone have any advice on this? I just want to be able to help her.

Thank you!

    Hi

i have suffered on and off with hair loss and breakage on and off since i was diagnosed or really since puberty. I found being on birth control helped, and making sure to use natural hair products with no parabens, sulfates or silicones. keeping it moisturized is important too.

i also had my vitamin levels tested, making sure to take a good supplement for iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin c and d.

there are other natural things she can try like ashwaganda supplements, and you can also do hair rinses with adaptogenic herbs

    hope that helps

I have PCOS and one of the main things she needs to do is eat healthy and keep her weight down. When my weight goes up, my symptoms get worse. A low gi diet is recommended, avoid sugar, alcohol and dairy. Some people find their symptoms improve on metformin, it helps balance your blood sugar levels.

My hair started to come out in clumps last year but I found out I had a vitamin d deficiency and as soon as I started taking a vitamin d spray it went back to normal. So it may not be the PCOS causing the hair loss. Some medications can cause hair loss too.

If her tests come back that she has pcos, get her an appointment with an endocrinologist and they can explain her condition in detail and give her good advice on how to manage her symptoms.

Before she uses anything she must be sure that it won't worsen her condition in the long run.

There are product on the market which work for as long as you use them (like shampoos and lotions...) BUT once you stop, your hair-loss comes back with a vengeance.

I have several conditions that provoke hair-loss (unconfirmed PCOS and/or insulin resistance, hypothyroid caused by an autoimmune disease...).

You've got some good advice here and I'd like to add that even if she isn't diagnosed with PCOS she still might be suffering from something related to glucose and insulin problems, like insulin resistance.

Again, even if none of this is medically confirmed (they have a number of criteria) she would still benefit tremendously from following a low glycemic index diet (she should eat food that do not spike her levels of glucose an insulin fast), built muscle (this is important!) and lose fat. So, being skinny is not a guarantee that she will bring her body into balance. She needs to have a healthy weight and exercise. and really watch her diet!

She should have her thyroid hormones and TSH level tested ti eliminated possible hypothyroidism.

She should be also tested for insulin resistance.

For restoration of my hair, I needed to take supplements and there are so many on the market out there, but not all of them have silica. You can buy it separately, but watch out. When you take it, you shouldn't take any meds aterwards for about two hours because silica could hinder their efficiency.

Keratin is also important and some supplements have it.

She should watch her protein intake. It mustn't be low but it should come from good sources. If she eats animal products they should be organic (I KNOW how expensive that is). She should eat wild fish, not grown.

The problem with aniaml products is that they are filled with hormones. Imagine if she has a high sensitivity to testosterone (which causes hair-loss and is very difficult to diagnose, because usually the hormone levels are ok) and continues to eat chicken or red meat filled with hormones?

Also, she should check out saw palmetto supplements. They can lower the testosterone sensitivity.

She should also avoid using plastic and hormone interrupters.

Hair-loss is only a symptom of a larger and requires a very global approach. There are no magical cures.

Some good supplements are expensive and worth the money, but most of them are just rubbish. Sorry, but it's true. They take loads of money for a simple B-vitamin complex + zinc... it's a robbery and what's worse it gives people false hopes and wastes their precious time.

She needs to change her life style and be patient!

my lotion was prescribed to me by a doctor it was bought offline etc which is why i would highly recommend that she mentions the hair loss to a doctor as they can prescribe things to help it to grow back thats why they did with me when my hair was falling out literally in clumps it never fell back out again i do have the usually hair loss over a few months but u normally loose up to 100 strands of hair a day as some hair strands only stay on your head for 3 months before shedding which is normal ...iv not had any issues since using it my hair has fully grown back an thankfully has stayed there 😂

Thank you everyone for your replies. We are still currently waiting for her results so we have no diagnosis yet. Her hair is still falling out especially after washing it, my heart is breaking for her. I am so worried and I can see she is to. If she is diagnosed with PCOS does any one have any recommendations of specialist doctors or consultants? We are willing to travel. Thank you!
