Halo surgery

so, I’m 7 days post op. Was completely naive to the fact this was going to hurt like it is.

6 months ago i was bleeding with every BM, thick heavy clots of blood. They claimed it was just IBS, i never had any pain or issues with the blood, it was obviously concerning. I sought a second opinion and had a colonoscopy booked in, they confirmed 2 grade 3 internal haemorrhoids, they werent bothering me at all, I’d had them since my pregnancy and they never went away. Doctor suggested halo anyway. So fast forward to last week, i was told this is minimally invasive, i could be at work in 48 hours and would take about 30 minutes to do.

I went down, was given anaesthesia and when i woke the pain was there straight away. The urge to "empty" was there along with a lot of pressure. After 30 minutes they let me go to the toilet, i couldn't go though, i did the one thing i didn’t want to, i felt why my back end felt so full, i was full of gauze, i pulled that out and felt instant relief from the pressure. couple of hours passed, i went home.

That night i struggled to eat, so i had soup and went to bed. All i was given was fibre supplement and lactulose. I had paracetamol and ibuprofen but neither helped.

Day 1 post op:

full of pain and pressure. find hot sitz baths helping, struggling to identify when to wee

Day 2 post op:

struggled to sleep, very tired tearful and agitated. pain level about 9/10

day 3 post op:

pain 11/10 had first bowel movement, tried not to strain but it was almost like having a baby and my body made me push, it was excruciating and i was losing blood. I then called my GP, i knew pain relief could work against me by making me constipated, but this was too much. He said i needed oramorph but to keep up with the laxatives too. signed me off work for a month

day 4 post op:

pain eased a little. had better sleep with morphine, trying to just take of an evening or after BM. had another today, no bleed but still awfully painful.

Day 5 post op:

actually got up and went downstairs, BM painful with blood but pain after subsided after 30-40 minutes whereas the previous 2 days its taken hours.

Day 6 post op:

feels like i have an external pile, painful and throbbing. pressure is worst its been, struggling to walk and feel like i need to clench all the time. BM was less painful today but was full of blood. Pain came afterwards and lasted 30 minutes. Full of wind too.

day 7 post op:

woke up, pain and pressure straight away still struggling to identify when i need a wee, external pile is throbbing now, sleeping more consistently eating more regularly too. still have toilet fear and I’m sick of struggling to sit down and stand up.

i just want to know, when will the pressure and pain pass? i could deal with the pain if it was just with BM but it’s always there. just feel exhausted and fed up now.

    Poor you.

    That sounds horrendous.

I had issues too with internal hems post pregnancy with bleeding with bm..

I was told i had several grade 3 hems.

    Had them banded.

The pain was worse than childbirth that evening.

I dont think its worked as still get the bleeding.

Lactolose has helped which I now take daily. (this is probably what is making you gasy).

I dont want to go down surgery option- heard so many stories like yours.

    Hope you feel better soon.x
