Haloperidol effects

Dear All,

I got injected only once with Haloperidol, got it az ER as tranquilizer (even though I only felt uneasy...) That caused me to fell asleep, I woke up in a couple of hours, only a bit of twitching in my shoulder, but a pill took care of that for good. This happened a year ago.

I read various articles on the internet that Haloperidol (and basically psychiatric drugs) can cause brain damage/brain volume shrinkage.

This stuff got me worried as a would be software engineer I wish to dedicate my whole life to learning IT/programming and I need my brain in top shape to do so. I got no other medications than haloperidol and that pill afterwards. Shall I be worried about possible brain damage? I admit those articles were about persistent use but I'm still worried.

For the record: Tests I performed recently: an official Mensa adaptive IQ test on which I scored no mistake, giving me an IQ above 125, a test for superior IQ would be needed to evaluate it accurately.

For my balace I usually do weighted single leg squats, I rarely fall on my bottom. For dexterity I play the clarinet and the saxophone, my technique has no more flaws than it used to have. For memory, I'm an Eastern-European university student, we have to cram everything and so far so good, I had the two semesters with all my credits completed with ease.

I understand this all sounds most hypochondriac, but born in a poorer family, my mind is all I have.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tamas, your one time of having Haloperidol in your system will not have caused you any brain damage, our bodies are remarkable for re-addressing biological changes whether that is foriegn chemicals or natural chemical changes. Many people with psychosis are on Haloperidol and other anti psychotic drugs and lead perfectly normal lives. Dr Pat Deegan who is a psychologist and researcher is a great example of someone who was on Haloperidol for years and still got her doctorship. I think this is your anxiety causing you to worry about something that has no substance. I hope this reassures you.

      thanks for your input.

you must be right and the articles on brain damage only took prolonged use into consideration. The one I got was to quickly calm me down then get out of my system. Even still, thanks for the update.

Take no offense, you are a patient (in this site) or a doctor?

I found your reply most helpful and reassuring but I also would like to hear from a doctor/apothecary on this, if they happen to read and reply to my thread.

Hi Tamas, I am an anxiety and panic experienced person who also happens to be a mental health professional. I work in mental health and am responsible for a service for carers and families and deliver training and information on mental health so although I am not a doctor I can say this with confidence and I've checked ith a psychiatrist colleague of mine who assures me a single dose of Haloperidol will not cause you brain damage. I hope this helps.

thank you too for the reply.

so I imagine this drug's one time use does not cause anything permanent. I slept like a baby for a couple of hours but then it clears out and everything is back to the way it used to be or so I imagine.

    Tamas,

Its easy to get cocnered about what we read we take the internet too literally too often. I am a firm believer that if the story carries no weight and doesnt reach its audience then it has failled, I guess what I am saying is that saying things will kill you sounds more convincing than if you say there are only 2 cases out of million that have killed...... Worry not about the past my friend move forward keep your good health and I'm sure you wil be fine. There will be thousands if not millions of people just like you that are a live and well smile
