Hammertoe after bunion surgery

I am now two years post op bunion surgery on both feet. I was happy with the result but now feel very upset that I have exchanged the problem of bunions for hammertoes as these have developed since the surgery. 

Has anyone else experienced this? They feel quite fixed on the left foot with the bone prominent but are able to move on the right. I am very worried that they will worsen, is there anything I can do to stop the progression? 

I really do not want any further surgery if possible and the thought of having to have any of the bones fused really does scare me.
